INTRODUCTION • Name: • Lisa Ramsey • Education: • California State University Chico – Majored in Liberal Studies, Emphasis in Child Development • California State University East Bay – Multiple Subject Teaching Credential • Background Information: • Taught Pre-Kindergarten for 3 ½ years in San Francisco • Student taught in 2nd and 4th grade classrooms • Substitute in SRVUSD in grades TK-4th • Long Term Substitute in Transitional Kindergarten • Taught 1st Grade at Coyote Creek last year • Excited to join the wonderful Creekside community this year!

  4. GOALS FOR THE YEAR • Implement state, district, and Creekside standards • Create a safe and constructive learning environment for our community of learners • Foster a love of learning in all of my students • Move them forward on their path to becoming lifelong learners

  5. PICK UP AND DROP OFF • Drop off is from 7:45-8:00 on the main campus playground • After school pick up is at 2:26 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. • After school pick up is at 1:00 on Wednesday • Kids Country, Flagpole, Playground • Please notify me if someone different will be picking up your child (grandparent, family friend, etc.) • New Line!!

ATTENDANCE & SNACK/LUNCH • Please call (925) 314-2098 if your child will be absent • If your child arrives at school after 8:00, please send them to the office to get a tardy slip • Snack (9:30-9:45) – Please provide a quick and healthy snack. It should be kept separate from your child’s lunch and/or labeled “snack”. • Lunch (11:15-12:00) – your child needs to know whether they have brought lunch or will be buying lunch. If they are buying lunch, you can add money to their account at the Creekside school website • Please make sure all items are labeled. If your child loses something, they can check the lost & found, located in the MPR

  7. READER’S WORKSHOP • Reader’s Workshop will provide opportunities for independent reading, partner reading, individual conferences with the teacher, read-alouds, book talks, and shared reading. • Leveled books will enable children to move at their own pace in independent reading, using books that are “just right” for them. • The goal is to develop comprehension through talking and thinking about books and to nurture a love of reading.

  8. WRITER’S WORKSHOP • Based on the New York Writing Project and has been adapted to meet the Common Core Standards • Units of Study – Small Moments/Personal Narratives, Revision/Editing, Nonfiction, Poetry

  9. MATH • Our district adopted math program is the Pearson Success Envision Math Program • Methods of instruction include direct instruction, self-directed exploration, individual work-books, group work, and math centers • SVMI Problem of the Month • Timed tests in first grade for addition and subtraction facts to 10

  10. SCIENCE • New science program: Next Generation Science Standards; more hands on curriculum to provide students with a richer understanding of the world around them • Science is once a week • Mrs. Watson, former Kinder and First grade teacher at Creekside, will be their teacher!

  11. SOCIAL STUDIES • The social studies program we use is Scott Foresman. • The curriculum explores school, family, community, land and country, map skills, and our world. • Safety, famous people, holidays and traditions, diversity, and good citizenship are also covered.

  12. P.E. • Twice a week, Mondays and Fridays, with Mrs. McConnell • Please make sure your child wears appropriate running shoes and clothing! • Don’t forget sunscreen!

  13. LIBRARY/TECH TIME/ART • Library – We will go to the library once a week to visit Mrs. Worth. Our library day is Thursday, meaning your child must return their book to school by Wednesday in order to check out a new one. If you lose a book, you are monetarily responsible for it. • Tech Time – Computer Lab once a week, COW time in the classroom, plus iPads in the classroom • Art – Monthly lessons with an art docent parent as well as art lessons with Ms. Bhu

  14. BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT • Positive Reinforcement • Ticket system • Students can earn tickets throughout the day for making good choices, being a good citizen, producing quality work, etc. • Students can use their tickets to buy coupons • Bathroom=1 ticket

  15. HOMEWORK • Homework will start on Friday, September 12 and will be due on Friday, September 19. • Homework will be posted on our class website. Make sure you check the website on Fridays so that you can download our homework. • Completed homework should be brought to school each Friday in your child’s daily communication folder. • You will receive your child’s math homework book tonight. This book is to be kept at home. When assigned pages, please tear them out, have your child complete the pages, and turn them in on Friday. • Homework should take no more than 20-30 minutes per day, including reading.

  16. HOMEWORK • Homework encourages organization and responsibility. • Please designate a quiet area for your child to complete their homework. • Help your child get started, making sure they understand the directions, but let them do the homework independently. • When done, please check the homework with your child. Correct any mistakes together. Immediate feedback is powerful and it creates a “teachable moment” for you and your child.

  17. CLASSROOM BUSINESS • The Comet Folder will come home on Tuesdays when there is something in it from the school. Please return it on Wednesday. • If you need to let me know something about your child on a particular day, please send a note in their Daily Communication Folder and have them hand it to me when they unpack in the morning. • Please send a healthy snack to school with your child every day. • If someone different will be picking up your child, please let me know.

  18. INDEPENDENT STUDY • If students are going to miss 5+ days of school, they are eligible to receive an independent study contract. • Please notify me as soon as possible if you know you are planning a getaway. These packets take a long time to prepare. • The packet MUST be turned in on the day of return. • The packet must be at least 80% complete in order for your absence to be considered excused.

  19. STAR OF THE WEEK • Star of the Week includes a week of recognition of being an important member of our class. • Activities Include: • Star of the Week Poster • Share Sack • Secret Number Jar • Favorite Book • All items will be coming home tonight and need to come back to school when it is your child’s week to be a star. • You can check my website to find out your child’s week.

  20. BIRTHDAYS • Due to the high number of food allergies at our school, please do not bring food or candy items as a birthday treat. • Instead, we encourage your child to bring his/her favorite book to school so we can share in a special birthday read-aloud. While it is completely optional, if you would like to donate this book to the classroom library please have your child sign the inside cover so we can remember who it is from. • On your child's birthday we will also sing "Happy Birthday" and they will get to take home something special. • Summer birthdays will be celebrated toward the end of the school year.

  21. FIELD TRIPS • Please be sure to complete up to level 2 of the Volunteer Clearance process if you even think you might drive on a field trip. • 1st graders will go to the Lindsay Wildlife Museum, the theatre, and the Apple Store. • Busses have been provided by our PTA for 2 trips, Thank you!

  22. VOLUNTEERS • Please sign up tonight • Need room parents, library helpers, help in the class, help at home, etc. • Library (Thursdays from 1:25-1:55)-sign up available; You MUST attend a training on Friday, September 5th from 8-8:30 in the library. Duties include re-shelving books, helping students find books, cleaning up bookshelves after the students leave. • Hoping the room parents can coordinate a weekly sign up for centers, computer lab, etc. 

  23. ON A FINAL NOTE... • If you want to get a message to me, email is the best way! My email islromano@srvusd.net. I will check my email before school and after school. If I do not answer in 24 hours, please bring it to my attention! • Our classroom website is mrsramseysfirstgrade.weebly.com • You must sign in and out of the office at all times. • Please make sure you sign the media release form. • Conferences for 1st grade are in the middle of October. • Thank you so much for all of your support!
