  2. Introduction • Boy Scouts : The Largest Boys’ Organization in the World • In more than 130 different countries • Over 2 Million Tigers, Cubs, & Webelos • Over Half a Million Cub Scout Leaders • Packs are organized to achieve the Purposes of Cub Scouting • Leaders Work together as a Team

  3. Chartered Organization • The community organization that owns and operates your Scouting unit • The Chartered Organization: • Furnishes meeting place for Pack meeting • Appoints a Pack Committee (3 or more) • Appoints a chartered organization representative as the liaison to its units • CSLB chapter 13, pages 143-144

  4. Tiger Cub Groups • A BSA Program for First-grade Boys and an adult partner • Affiliated with the Pack • A school year program only - they graduate to Cub Scouts after first-grade • The Tiger Cub group coach is a: • Resource person for the Groups • Link to the Groups from the Pack

  5. Leadership Responsibilities • Den and Pack leading is enjoyable and rewarding, but carries responsibilities • What are the responsibilities for your position? (covered in Fast Start, and CSLB chapter 4, pages 30-40) • Leaders have responsibilities to the boys, the families, and the Pack • Leadership positions are all open to both men and women

  6. Teamwork • No one leader can carry out his or her responsibilities alone - it takes a team! • Teamwork in Cub Scouting means planning, leading, and evaluating the program with the help of others • All leaders must learn to work together • Successful Packs foster teamwork and cooperation among their leaders

  7. Benefits of Teamwork • Shared responsibility makes jobs easier • Members contribute unique ideas, bringing variety and imagination to the plan • Incorporates unique individual talents and abilities into a single, coherent plan • Allows us to sound out new ideas together • The boys learn more, because a team will usually create a better program plan

  8. Effective Leadership • Maintain a positive & enthusiastic attitude • Work successfully with adults • Don’t let adult conflicts interfere with the boys • Work successfully with boys • Treat them with respect as individuals • Give them a fun and adventurous program • Develop a sense of belonging and Scouting spirit... to give them pride and security

Effective Leadership ...continued • Set a good example for boys and adults • Actions always speak louder than words • see CSLB pgs 26-27 on setting the example • Continue learning and growing in leadership skills (through training) • Evaluate and improve your performance • Practice good communications

Summary • Acceptance of a leadership position is a personal commitment to Scouting • You commit time, effort, & knowledge • You commit patience & understanding • You are a living example to the boys... • ...and a helping hand to fellow Scouters • It is your opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our boys
