  1. Moving Through the Digestive Tract Write the following questions on a piece of notebook paper. Leave several lines between each question.

  2. Step 1 • How do you think food moves through the digestive tract? • What do you think happens to food as it moves through the digestive tract? • Why do you think the digestive tract gets narrower at some places?

  3. Step 2 • Discuss your answers in your group. • Agree on a single answer. • Select a spokesperson • Share your answers.

  4. Open up your book and turn to page 10. • Follow along as I read to you the procedure for the lab. • Select one person from your group and collect supplies for the lab.

  5. Procedure: In your notebook copy down this chart.

  6. Step 2 • Place the plastic tubing on a flat surface. • Unroll about 40 cm of the tube. • Using figure 2.3 and the data table as a guide, measure and mark on the tubing the approximate length of each organ of the tube. The opening represents the mouth. Use masking tape to record measurement and labeled organ. • Start at the opening (the mouth) and measure 11 cm down from the opening. • Label on the masking tape11 cm as the end of mouth.

  7. Step 2 cont. • From the 11 cm mark, measure out 25 cm. • Continue measuring and marking and writing down each organ on the masking tape until you reach the end opening of the tube. • This is the anus • Double check your measurements to make sure they are correct. • Cut off any extra tubing.

  12. Reflection: Answer questions under your chart • How was the movement of the tennis ball similar to the movement of food as it passes through the digestive tract? • How was it different?
