FAER Anesthesia Retreat • Examination of the current state of academic anesthesia. • Proposed strategic goals for the growth and survival of academic anesthesia. • Develop and implement strategies to accomplish goals. • Examine the future of anesthesia practice and the implications new paradigms hold for academic programs.

  15. FAER Anesthesia Retreat Proposed Strategies Research training and recruitment: Voluntary expansion of training to include year of research. Create early match for those desirous of 5-year program. Encourage faculty participation in preclinical teaching. Identify “Centers of Excellence” for subspecialty training.

FAER Anesthesia Retreat Proposed Strategies Guidance and mentoring for new department chairs: SAAC and AUA develop a program orienting chair candidates and new chairs to difficulties and opportunities facing those attempting to create successful academic programs. Structured course Individualized mentoring

  17. FAER Anesthesia Retreat Proposed Strategies Identify deficiencies in scholarly productivity of core programs: RRC/ACGME increase assertiveness in reviewing programs for scholarly productivity. Creation of a cadre of willing qualified individuals to provide input and consultative support to deficient departments.

FAER Anesthesia Retreat Proposed Strategies Future paradigms for anesthesia practice and implications for academic programs: Provide training in anesthesia programs in supervisory roles involving the anesthesia care team of the future for senior housestaff. Examine the future role of the anesthesia care team and its involvement in perioperative care. Efforts devoted to examination of reimbursement methodology for clinical care and teaching in academic anesthesia programs.
