“Let Food Be Thy Medicine!” (Food Matters Theme) • “There are foods that provide health benefits beyond the traditional nutrients they contain. These foods enhance our body's immune system and may help prevent disease, aid in recovery from diseases such as cholesterol-lowering, regulate our body's rhythm (food that act on digestive function), and suppress aging.” Examples: • Carrots - Are good for the eyes and skin because of Carotenoids/Vitamin A. However, today, carrots may also help prevent cancer and cardiovascular diseases. • Fish/Nuts – Are great sources of protein. However, they also contain omega-3-fatty acids in fish help reduce cholesterol level. • Tomatoes - Provide us with vitamins also contain lycopenes that are helpful in cancer prevention. “You Are What You Eat”(Food Matters Theme) • “It is important to remember that food supplies more than just calories.” Simple View: • If you eat fatty foods, your body literally becomes fatty. • If you eat healthy foods, you will be healthy. Complex View: • If you eat fruit and vegetables, you consume the vitamins, fiber, and minerals that are found in it, which is used by your body. This shows that you are what you eat. (Food For Thought, 2010)
