  1. An Overview of the Australian Curriculum The Australian curriculum provides schools, teachers, students, and the rest of the educational community with a clear and concise program for what young students in Australia should learn. The curriculum is implemented nationwide, regardless of what educational institution the students are enrolled in. The national curriculum provides a set program for students from Foundation to Year 10. This program includes the curriculum content, an achievement standard for the students, and freedom for teachers to tailor their classes based on student needs. The Australian curriculum focuses on three main dimensions: •Learning Areas There are eight key learning areas in the Australian national curriculum: Science, Mathematics, English, Languages, Humanities and Social Sciences, Technologies, the Arts, and Health and Physical Education. These learning areas focus on the knowledge, understanding, and skills of each subject to be taught each year. There are also achievement standards that the students must reach as a result of learning in the classroom. •General Capabilities General capabilities in the Australian curriculum are sets of skills that help prepare students for living and working in the 21st century. These skills are critical and creative thinking, literacy, numeracy, intercultural understanding, personal and social capability, information and communication technology capability, and ethical understanding. •Cross-curriculum Priorities Aside from the learning areas and general capabilities, the national curriculum also emphasises cross-curriculum learning with importance to Australia’s future: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Histories and Culture, Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia, and Sustainability. Overall, the Australian curriculum focuses on developing skills and abilities that are in line with the purpose of education. The curriculum is designed to develop practical skills and enhance productivity, prepare students for dealing with the future, develop the child through personal learning, critique society, and expose students to the best that has been taught and said.
