AP English Language • Global and independent thinking (through current events) • Emphasizes non-fiction (books & essays) • Reading of some fiction pieces • Focus on language (rhetoric, analysis, & argumentation) • Testing for credit occurs at the end of your Junior year. • 3 Timed Writings each 9 weeks count as major grades • 3 Timed Writings each 9 weeks count as minor grades (for practice)

  2. AP English Language • Novels: • The Scarlet Letter • The Great Gatsby • Their Eyes Were Watching God • Plays: • The Crucible • The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail • Non-Fiction: • The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks • 2 Additional Non-Fiction Novels (Student Choice)

IB English • More global and open ended thinking • Assessment pieces are completed during class in Junior and Senior years • 2 of the assessments are oral presentations • Seated exam time in a 2 year period is similar to AP • Focus on language and literature during BOTH years • This course requires a 2 year commitment in order to earn credit. • Approximately 8 Major Writing Assessments each year (1500 words) • Discussion-based curriculum

IB English III • Students are required to purchase their own copy of all texts (with the exception of those noted with an * ). • EngIII - Summer reading assignment to be completed prior to start of school: • Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller • Eng III – Fall Semester: Part IV - Options • Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad • Selections from The Stories of Eva Luna by Isabel Allende • IB Assessment: Oral Presentation 15% • English III – Spring Semester: Part I – Works in Translation • Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez • The Stranger by Albert Camus • Metamorphosis and “The Hunger Artist” by Franz Kafka • IB Assessment: World Literature Paper – 1500 words 25%
