  1. Different Gender Roles during the Classical Period (1000 B.C.E-500 C.E) By: Alexander J. Period 3 AP World History E.C.

  2. I. Women- Classical China

  3. Their Roles • Women had their clearly defined roles • They could sometimes gain power: • Through their sons • And as younger women brought into the household • Education for women was not popular during these times and were sometimes not allowed • Though they could receive limited education for them to be able to teach their sons. • Women were later able to work at the textile industry and were the most employed in this position because they were good at it

  4. Influential factor, Confucianism • In Confucian belief, everyone had a role in society and they had to obey to it • Women’s main duty were just to bear offspring for their husbands (you can’t without them) • They were to obey their husbands…even their sons when they got older (Boys > Girls theory) The story of Mulanis sort of a great example to show how their roles were like. Just the start where she and the women are going to the matchmaker. And the whole plot of the story too (her dressing up as a guy.)

  5. Women Classical India

  6. Ladies losin’ their rights! • They were respected at first • they were educated, they had a say in family matters, and were free to choose their own husbands • But within time they started to lost their freedom • They weren’t allowed to have involvement in the political system • Daughters were considered to be a burden and were expected to do chores in the household

  7. And then there was SATI!!!  • A practice called Sati started to arise • Sati was the practice were women had to commit suicide, (by intentionally jumping into FIRE!!!) when widowed ,at her husband’s pyre • Beforehand, they were tortured and humiliated and there was a crowd of relatives and sometimes strangers to watch. The horrible sight of a Sati going on. And by the picture, you can tell that there were spectators

  8. Women- Classical Mediterrenean Classical Greece Classical Rome

  9. Women- Classical Greece • They had very few rights • They were under control of their husband, father, or a male relative for their entire lives • They were to stay indoors only (the only job outside for them was being a priestess.) • The law required all inheritance to go through the male line and limited property that could be owned by the women

  10. Women- Classical Rome • Like Greece, they were controlled by their fathers, then their husbands, and then mabye a male relative such as their sons • They weren’t allowed to hold office • BUT…. • Husbands started to seek advice from their wives • Though they had to be given in private because it was embarrassing (This can be seen in the book “The Golden Kite, The Silver Wind near the end of the book where the Mandarin’s daughter gives her dad advice.)

  11. THE END 
