  3. “Context” • 1. We read in context. • 2. “Knowing a Loving God” has context. • Today: In this sermon we are looking at the false teachings about Jesus that John is refuting, the reasons John wrote, and how 1 John is relevant for us today.

  4. Weird Thoughts About Jesus • What are some of the weirdest thoughts you have heard about Jesus? • How have your thoughts about Jesus changed over time?

  5. Context of the Letter • Author – John • Recipients – General Epistle to Asia Minor. Note 1 John 2:20 and 2:27. • Date – Close to AD 70.

  6. Why Did John Write? • He tells us in: • 1 John 1:4 • 1 John 2:1 • 1 John 2:7-8 • 1 John 2:12-14 • 1 John 5:13 “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”

  7. False Teachings

  8. The False Teachings • From those with “special knowledge”. • Gnosticism (the Greek word for “knowledge” is “gnosis”.) • They taught that all matter was evil. • He “seemed” to have flesh. • The man Jesus was possessed by the “Christ spirit”.

  9. Why Did People Listen? • People liked the message! • Some thought we should abstain from the desires of the flesh. • Others taught the flesh could not corrupt the spirit. Sin without consequence.

  10. We need to be aware of how we present Jesus to people.

  11. John Knows a Loving God • These are passionate words written by a person who loved Jesus deeply and knew how much Jesus love him. • Pay attention to the divine claims, physical terms, and the level of personal connection.

  12. 1 John 1:1-4 Page 1898 • That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. …

  13. 1 John 1:1-4 Page 1898 • …3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our joy complete.

  14. Taking It Home • Knowing a loving God involves interacting with him in true fellowship as God and man. • Our evangelism is impacted when we speak of our relationship with Jesus and the benefits of our connection to Him and His church. • This week start the conversations that help make the adjustment to sharing the Jesus that you know and love so that their joy may be complete, as yours is, as you invite them to come to know Jesus our loving God.
