Progetto: LIFE12 ENV/IT/000652 «CLEANSED» Innovative integrated methodology for the use of decontaminated river sediments in plant nursing and road building OBJECTIVES The CLEANSED project will demonstrate, evaluate and disseminate an innovative, integrated, multisector approach for the smart and sustainable management of polluted dredged river sediments. Polluted sediments will be dredged, transformed from a contaminated waste into a valuable material via a specific decontamination treatment, and then put to productive use in the plant nursing and road construction sectors.

Progetto: LIFE12 ENV/IT/000652 «CLEANSED» Innovative integrated methodology for the use of decontaminated river sediments in plant nursing and road building ACTION B.1: Dredging, analysis and characterization of contaminated sediments In this phase, the CNR-ISE activity will be focused on the analysis of the dredged sediments from a physical, chemical, biochemical and toxicological point of view, in order to evaluate the suitable treatments forsedimentreclamation: evaluation of the sediment properties choice of the suitable treatment for sediment reclamation The results of the analyses will lead to: - full characterization of the dredged sediments characterization of the sediments in relation to the limitations provided for by the DL n°152/2006 definition of the treatment to be performed on the sediments (soil washing and/or phytoremediation) identification and prompt solution of possible compatibility issues between the dredged sediments and the treatment necessary to allow their use in plant nursing and road building.

Contingency plan all efforts will be made to avoid the event, but it is assumed that minor delays in any of the mentioned activities would not impede the smooth development of the project.

Progetto: LIFE10 ENV/IT/ 000364 «ECOFATTING»«Environmentally friendly natural products instead of cloroparaffines in the fatting phase of the tanning cycle» ACTION B.2: Sediment treatment This action will lead to the successful treatment and decontamination of the river sediments dredged in action B1. the more suitable post-treatment needed to reduce the water content at the optimal value needed for workability and compaction of sediments will be identified. Probably an additional post-treatment phase can be needed to reduce the organic material content toacceptablevalues. In this action, sediments collected by the canal will be further treated by means of the landfarming technology as a post-treatment phase. This last phase is aimed to have a material well stabilized, biologically rich, and safe for the environment. The treatment will be carried on for six months, after which the sediments will undergo all the analyses and tests required by the project as well as by the law and finally transported to the plant nursing and road construction sites.

Contingency plan The decontamination method chosen has been thoroughly tested and proven effective, so it is unlikely that it will not work properly. At any rate, environmental, chemical, biochemical and physical tests will demonstrate the specific reasons for possible case-specific failures, opening the way for solutions (fine-tuning, procedure customization patterns and so on).

Progetto: LIFE12 ENV/IT/000652 «CLEANSED» Innovative integrated methodology for the use of decontaminated river sediments in plant nursing and road building ACTION B.3: Demonstration of the use of decontaminated sediments as a substrate for plant nursing In this phase, the treated sediment will be used as agronomic substrate in field scale, in order to evaluate the treated sediment properties in real scale. The field trial will be set up, with suitable plant species and the soil properties and plant growth will be monitored, also by IBIMET research unit. The specific technical goal of this action is to demonstrate the use of decontaminated dredged river sediments in the field of plant nursing, as a substitute for explanted clods from ornamental plants cultivation areas.

Contingency plan The number and variety of plants and cold frames used for demonstration activities will drastically reduce the impact of such delays and/or problems on the overall achievement of the project objectives. In case of problems with supplies or equipment, the consortium will proceed to a timely replacement.

Progetto: LIFE12 ENV/IT/000652 «CLEANSED» Innovative integrated methodology for the use of decontaminated river sediments in plant nursing and road building ACTION B.4: Demonstration of the use of decontaminated sediments in road construction The objective of this action is the demonstration of the use of decontaminated dredged river sediments in the construction of roads. The activities will be carried out on a demonstration site pertaining to the Department of Civil Engineering of the Pisa University (partner DICI). The specific technical goals of this action are: - preliminary assessment of the optimum percentages of use of the treated sediments for the different parts of a road (foundations, intermediate layer, etc); - construction of a site for the demonstration of the use of sediment mixtures in the construction of an actual, life-size road

At the end of the treatment, the treated sediment will be analysed in order to evaluate if the reclamation has been successful. CNR-ISE research unit will analyse the treated sediments from a chemical, biochemical and toxicological point of view. The sediment samples will be also collected and sent to CEBAS and UniFI research units for physical and microbiological, and eco-toxicological analyses, respectively

Progetto: LIFE12 ENV/IT/000652 «CLEANSED» Innovative integrated methodology for the use of decontaminated river sediments in plant nursing and road building ACTION C.2: Monitoring and validation of the use of decontaminated sediments for plant nursing The implementation of this action will lead to the validation of the use of decontaminated sediments for plant nursing according to current industrial standards of the sector. Every demonstration item will be monitored through periodic analyses and plant growth will be measured periodically. At the end of the vegetation season, part of the plants will be destroyed to evaluate the biomass produced and its allocation. Another part will be left in the cold frames to be examined the following year.

The demonstration and monitoring activities will be carried out using a rotating cutting press capable of measuring tangential tension, to assess the influence of the addition of sediments on the thickening of the mixtures. Standard structural measurements will be taken on the demonstration road, based on standard inspection protocols for civil roads.

The study will include an overview of the positive socio-economic effects of the project, as well as projections and estimates connected with future large-scale applications in terms of direct or indirect employment growth, enhancement of other activities, development of supplementary income sources, overcoming of social and economic isolation, raised profile of the involved areas. The consideration of these retrospective and prospect data will further demonstrate the project’s positive impact and viability for the local community.

In fact, the cost for landfill disposal is around €75/m3, while the proposed technology will be of about €35-45/m3. The treated material could have a market value between €10 and €20/m3, meaning a 60-80% net saving.
