  2. Do-Now • What is your favorite part or story from the book so far? Why? • What is your least favorite part or story from the book so far? Why? • *Announcements: • Due Date Change: Journals will be due Monday unless you have it today • Test next week Thursday (Sept 27) • Final drafts due

  3. Prayer (Gabriel) Monday: Janet, Tuesday: Saiku

  4. SWBAT… • Explain how tone and mood can add or detract from an author’s effectiveness in achieving purpose • 8.12.7 Evaluate the effectiveness of an author’s efforts to achieve his or her purpose in a text in which the rhetoric is particularly effective, analyzing how style and content contribute to the power, persuasiveness, or eloquence of the text

  5. Bouncy Ball Video Group 1: How does this video make you feel? Write specific things about the video that contribute to why you feel this way. Group 2: How do you think the creators of this video want you to feel? Write specific things about the video that make you think that this is what they’re trying to get at.

  6. Mood • How YOU feel when reading/watching something • Think “mood = me”

  7. Tone How the author feels about the subject • Examine an author’s word choice about a subject

  8. Choose SIX words that stand out to you in this paragraph Close both eyes; see with the other one. Then, we are no longer saddled by the burden of our persistent judgments, our ceaseless withholding, our constant exclusion. Our sphere has widened, and we find ourselves, quite unexpectedly, in a new, expansive location, in a place of endless acceptance and infinite love, (Boyle, 145).

  9. Something to think about… • How do tone and mood help or hurt an author’s effectiveness in achieving his or her purpose?

  10. Outlines: • Trade with a partner. • Partners: • Write one thing that the person you switched with does well. • Write two things that they need to improve upon. • When finished, work on rough drafts

  11. HW: • Rough Draft- you need a HARD COPY (can’t just be on your computer)

  12. If you finish early, discuss with a partner: Fr. Greg talks about how Al gore, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton all walk into a room differently, but that their want for everyone to think they’re right or know they’re in charge are “fear-based” responses. Do you think this is true of all humans? That how we want others to perceive us is based on some sort of insecurity we have?
