  1. How did Policing develop in Britain after 1829? • 1835: New Law said towns could set up their own police forces • 1839: A new law said counties could set up their own police forces. The Bow Street Runners and other forces in London were amalgamated into the Metropolitan Police. • 1842: Metropolitan Police set up the first detective force • 1856: It became compulsory for all towns and counties to set up Police forces • 1870: Police Helmets were introduced • 1884: 39,000 Police in Britain
