  1. CENG112 Midterm Review Weeks 1-4 Review

  2. Midterm Format • The midterm will be 10 short answer questions. You will have 1 hour to complete it. • Short answer means you’ll write a clear paragraph in response to each question. • The midterm is worth 10% of your final grade (so think of it as 1% per question). • The midterm will cover weeks 1-4 and The Veldt from week 5.

  3. Topics Covered • Week 1: What is “popular literature” introduction • Week 2: Fairy Tales as the First Pop Lit • Week 3: Horror as Popular Literature • Week 4: Young Adult Fiction • Week 5: Class Cancelled but Ray Bradbury’s short story, The Veldt, will be covered on the exam.

  4. Week 1 Review • You should know the definitions of AUDIENCE, CONTEXT and PURPOSE. Remember, “Context” has two different meanings. • You may be asked to analyze a short passage from the Drake song, Money to Blow. • I began the course by asking you why Justin Bieber is popular. We broke it down using audience, context, and purpose. You may be asked to do that again with a genre of literature such as horror, young adult fiction, or fairy tales.

  5. Week 2 Review • You read two versions of Bluebeard. What was the moral in Perrault’s original version? What was the moral in FracescaLia Block’s version? • You were given a general history of fairy tales: oral folk tales  1800s Grimms Tales  1930s and up Disneyfication of tales  1960s psychoanalytical interpretation of tales (Bettelheim)  1980s + Postmodern & Feminist rewrites. I gave examples for each period. You should be able to explain the significance and/or difference between each period. • What is the “purpose” of fairy tales?

  6. Week 3 Review • What is the difference between horror and realism? (for this you need to know what realism is) • I gave you an overview of the history of the horror genre beginning with Gothic Horror (18th C)  Horror in the 19thC  Horror in the 20thC  Contemporary Horror. Know the defining features of each period. • H.P. Lovecraft said “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” What is meant by this.

  7. Week 3 Continued • Elizabeth Barrette identified two categories that “make horror horrifying”: Elements of Absence and Elements of Presence. Know what those elements are. To review this you can visit: http://www.fictionfactor.com/guests/aversion.html You may be given a short passage from one of the stories we read and be asked to identify which elements are at play in the passage.

  8. Week 4 Review • You have detailed notes on this lecture that were handed out last week. • Be aware of the history of young adult literature and the changes it underwent over time. • What were some of the defining changes in young adults as noted by psychologists? • How are those experiences of young adulthood used in a book like Twilight? • According to Marcela Valdes, what is terrifying teens in today’s young adult novels? What evidence does she give?

  9. Week 5 Review • Class was cancelled and we will spend some time catching up. Please come to class having read all three stories listed in the course outline. • The Veldt will be on the midterm. There are questions at the end of the story. Any of 1-6 could end up on the midterm.
