  1. Broadband Networked Drill String Unlocks Operational Performance Potential by Transmitting Downhole Measurements in Real Time Authors: Daan Veeningen, Jesus Saenz, Ron Weegman, NOV IntelliServ

  2. Talking Points • What is the Context? • What is the Technology? • What is the Approach? • What is the Impact? • Summary and Thoughts

  3. The Context As drilling operations become more challenging geologists, operators and engineers need new ways to improve operational efficiency, increase production, reduce NPT and minimize risks. Current methods of data acquisition rely on wireless data transfer technologies (mud pulse & electromagnetic transmission) ineffective in downhole transmission media conditions. On their own these technologies cannot achieve the speed or volume of data transfer required for modern downhole operations and subsurface evaluations. And currently these technologies can only transfer data from the BHA and the status of the wellbore is currently unknown as measurements can not be acquired along the drillstring.

  4. Broadband Network: The Technology 57,000 bits/sec Simultaneous data High bandwidth High definition High Volume Real time Mud Pulse IntelliServ Broadband 10 bits/sec Sequential data Continuous bi-directionaldata transfer Data transferred in 2-5 sec pulses Tool actuation vibration Sonic Image Logs Etc, Etc gammaresistivitypressurevibration

  5. Broadband Network: What it Means • Provides high-speed, high-volume, high-definition, bi-directional broadband data transmission that enables downhole conditions to be measured, evaluated, monitored allowing tool actuation in real time. • Enables instantaneous transmission of full datasets from measurement tools in the bottomhole assembly and for the first time all along the drillstring • Delivers drilling engineers and geologists get all the facts in real time and are able to make fast, accurate decisions and solve potential problems as they happen. • Offers redundancy for existing telemetry systems, reduces trips for failed pulsers and increased tolerance to LCM or inconsistent mud • Enables industry experts to clearly see things they couldn’t see before and achieve results like never before through a synthesis of broadband data transfer, measurements and operations

  6. Approach to Deploy the Broadband Network

  7. Impact: Recently Established Facts (Single Well) • Fault imaging at 100ft/hr in 17 ½” hole – Modifying well trajectory • Dip picking in real time – Improving structural understanding • Stick slip in real time – Modifying drilling parameters and extended hole section • Tool memory filled Up • Wellbore breakout imaging – Caliper in real time • Diagnosed sensor failure – Drilling Ahead • Conclusion: More data saves time to interpret Courtesy of Halliburton

  8. Impact: Recently Established Facts (Single Well) • Fault imaging at 100ft/hr in 17 ½” hole – Modifying well trajectory • Dip picking in real time – Improving structural understanding • Stick slip in real time – Modifying drilling parameters and extended hole section • Tool memory filled Up • Diagnosed sensor failure – Drilling Ahead • Conclusion: More data saves time to interpret Courtesy of Baker Hughes Inteq

  9. A) Mud Pulse Telemetry B) Broadband Network Impact: Recently Established Facts (Single Well) • Fault imaging at 100ft/hr in 17 ½” hole – Modifying well trajectory • Stick slip in real time – Modifying drilling parameters and extended hole section: Hole in One • Tool memory filled – Drilling ahead • Dip picking in real time – Improving structural understanding • Wellbore breakout imaging – Caliper in real time • Diagnosed sensor failure • Conclusion: More data saves time to interpret Courtesy of Baker Hughes Inteq

  10. In Summary • High-speed, high-volume, high-definition, bi-directional broadband network is widely available with numerous deployments • Enables downhole conditions to be measured, evaluated, monitored and allowing for tool actuation in real time • Delivers drilling engineers and geologists the ability to make fast, accurate decisions and solve potential problems as they happen • Offers redundancy, reduces trips for failed pulsers with increased tolerance to LCM or inconsistent mud • Network unlocks operational performance potential
