  1. Chapter 2 2-1 Simple Present • general statements of facts and truths • habitual activities or everyday activities 2-2 Present Progressive • activity that is in progress at the moment of speaking • Class – do Ex. 4

  2. Non-Progressive Verbs • verbs rarely used in the progressive tenses; describe conditions or situations – not actions • See common verbs with both non-progressive and progressive meanings • am/is/are + being (describes temporary behavior) Pairs – do Ex. 5 • Class – do Ex. 9, 10

  3. Simple Past • Activity or situation began and ended at a particular time in the past. • If a sentence contains when and has the simple past in both clauses, the action in the when-clause happens first. Example: 1 2 • When the phone rang, I answered it.

  4. What happened? Scene 1: B. Rita stood under a tree when it began to rain. Scene 2: A. Rita was standing under a tree when it began to rain.

  5. Past Progressive Both actions occurred at the same time, but one action began earlier and was in progress when the other action occurred. 1 2 • I was walking to class when it began to rain. • While I was walking to class, it began to rain. Sometimes past progressive is used in both parts of a sentence when two actions are in progress at the same time. • While I was studying in my room, my roommate was having a party in the living room. • ssshhh!!!
