  2. Filthy Rags Freedom Through the Promises of God

  3. Old Testament Worship

  4. Altars could be made of earth, un-hewn stone or brass, but not brick.

  5. Exodus 20:24,25 • An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee. And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

  6. Exodus 27:1,2 • And thou shalt make an altar ofshittim wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be foursquare: and the height thereof shall be three cubits. And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof: his horns shall be of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with brass.

  7. not in a garden. Sacrifices were to be in the tabernacle,

  8. Exodus 27:5 • And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

  9. A person who touched a dead body • was unclean.

  10. Numbers 19:16,17 • And whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a GRAVE, shall be unclean seven days. And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for SIN, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel.

  11. Most worship could not be done while a man was unclean. • No worship could be done while a man was eating an unclean thing.

  12. Leviticus 7:20 • But the soul that eatethof the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that pertain unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

  13. Leviticus 7:21 • Moreover the soul that shall touch any unclean thing, as the uncleanness of man, or anyunclean beast, or any abominable unclean thing, and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which pertain unto the LORD, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

  14. planting trees by the altar. The old testament did not allow

  15. Deuteronomy 16:21 • Thou shalt not plant thee a grove of ANY trees near unto the altar of the LORD thy God, which thou shalt make thee.

  16. When a man is wicked, even his sacrifice is abomination.

  17. Proverbs 21:27 • The sacrifice of the wickedisabomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind?

  18. Filthy Rags

  19. Isaiah 64:6-12 • But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnessESare as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. And there isnone that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

  20. Isaiah 64:6-12 • But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. Be not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people. Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

  21. Isaiah 64:6-12 • Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste. Wilt thou refrain thyself for these things, O LORD? wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very sore?

  22. Notice what their “righteousnesses” consisted of.

  23. Isaiah 65:1-7 • I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name. I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their OWN THOUGHTS.

  24. Isaiah 65:1-7 • A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that SACRIFICETH in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick; Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine’s flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels; Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.

  25. Isaiah 65:1-7 • Behold, it is written before me: I will not keep silence, but will recompense, even recompense into their bosom, Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their bosom.

  26. Isaiah 66:17 • They that SANCTIFY themselves, and PURIFY themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine’s flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD.

  27. Their rightesounesses were these: • Not calling on God’s name (but since they were worshipping, they must have been calling on someone’s name.) • Sacrificing in gardens.

  28. Their rightesounesses were these: • Using altars of brick. • Sleeping with dead bodies, not unlikely as part of their “worship.” • Saying, “Don’t come near me; I am holier than thou.”

  29. Their rightesounesses were these: • Burning incense upon mountains. • Sacrificing in gardens. • Blaspheming God on the hills.

  30. Their rightesounesses • Eating things that were unclean and abominable, such as swine and mice, were also part of their “worship.” were these:

  31. ARE filthy and evil. Those kinds of righteousnesses

  32. REAL Righteousness

  33. But what does God think of real righteousness?

  34. in the sight of God? Is meekness “filthy rags”

  35. 1 Peter 3:3 • Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of GREAT PRICE.

  36. Does God think a virtuous woman • is “filthy rags?”

  37. Proverbs 31:10 • Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

  38. Is a wise reprover on an obedient ear • “filthy rags” in the sight of God?

  39. Proverbs 25:12 • As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

  40. The Devils’ Doctrine

  41. 1 Timothy 4:1 • Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.

  42. The sincerely righteous things we do are filthy in God’s eyes. • We are not capable of consistently doing righteousness or being righteous. Only the devil or someone helping him would invent a doctrine that said

  43. Titus 3:8 • This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintaingood works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

  44. The belief that “righteousness is all filthy rags” is designed to discourage people from being careful to maintain good works.

  45. 2 Peter 1:5-7 • And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

  46. 2 Peter 1:10,11 • Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: FOR if ye DO these things, ye shall never fall: For SO an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

  47. The philosophy: “righteousness is all filthy rags” will discourage people • from being diligent about their personal spiritual growth.

  48. as we do trying to prove it can’t be done, we would grow like never before! If we spent as much effort seriously doing the will of God

  49. James 2:14,15 • What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food.

  50. James 2:16,17 • And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
