  2. Why is it such a problem? • Most IB students are not used to needing “actual” study time- they have done very well in middle school! • Unsure of how to study • Starting now might seem overwhelming • Procrastination!!!

  3. Perfectionism Fear of Failure Confusion Task Difficulty Poor Motivation Difficulty Concentrating Task Unpleasantness Lack of Priorities PROCRASTINATION

  4. The Mystery Can be Solved! • Prioritize & Make Goals • Commit to the Task • Reward Yourself

  5. Time Scheduling • Long Term Schedule • Fixed commitments only • Intermediate Schedule • Major works for the week/amount of work • Non-study activities too! • Short Term Schedule • Small note card (keep with you!) • Specifically what needs to be completed

  6. Control the Environment • Set aside a fixed place (quiet, free of distractions) so that it becomes the appropriate behavior • Write down expected time to finish • Have a “study hat”- if the item is on, do not disturb! Keep it just for studying

  7. Stand up and stretch away from books Set aside a regular study time until it becomes habit Don’t start unfinished business (keep a reminder pad) Divide assignments into subsections Relax!

  8. Remembering… • General memorizing: ideas without exact words • Verbatim memorizing: identical words

  9. How to remember! • Understand what needs to be memorized • Use a special symbol to mark “verbatim” memorizing • Study items first you want to remember longest • Use imagery • List key words • Teach others • Use grammatical cues
