Rethinking Chapter Advising: The Role of Coaching & Technology
Greek Summit NASPA’s Fraternity & Sorority Affairs Knowledge Community (FSKC) • Senior Student Affairs Officers (SSAOs) • National Fraternity & Sorority Leaders • Think-tank style – Two day meeting • Since 1997
2011 Summit Main focus: How can campuses and national organizations maximize the impact of the staff and volunteers they deploy to support fraternity/sorority life on campus?
Session Goals Today • Share a possible new approach to fraternity & sorority advising (15 minutes) • Open up the Panel to Discussion/Q & A (40 minutes) • Conclusion (5 minutes)
The Current State of Affairs • Campus level advisors hired by campuses • Chapter consultants hired by national fraternities and sororities – provide intermittent support • Volunteers/chapter Advisors • Faculty/staff members • Alumni/ae • Focus on group-level advising & activity
A New Option? Revamp the central campus advising model • Develop a group of alumni volunteer “coaches” • These volunteers would then coach individual student leaders • New technology would allow this to be done consistently
1. Shift the focus to leadership coaching • Individual student leaders could be mentored by trained coaches • Stronger leadership within the chapter could lead to better chapter performance.
2. Take a team approach • Each student leader within each organization could be assigned a “coach” • Eases the obligations of the volunteers • Provides “back up” in case volunteers need to withdraw
Expand volunteer alumni involvement as coaches and advisors • Makes volunteering more appealing • Mimics successful youth mentoring programs throughout the country • Technology allows alumni to volunteer even if they can’t travel
Reshape the roles of fraternity/sorority advisor and chapter consultant. • Become advisors of coaches instead of advisors for student leaders • Training coaches • Recruiting volunteers • Working with alumni/ae
Provide uniform training to certify coaches and advisors • Alumni & faculty vary widely in the tools they bring to volunteering • A core curriculum could be developed • Technology can provide uniform and accessible training
Encourage preparation programs to address volunteer development as a required professional skill • Change the curriculum for graduate professional preparation programs • Volunteer Development • Organizational Development • Leadership Coaching
