  2. Problem Statement How to increase Female Teen’s participation in strength exercise by using resistance bands?

  3. Purpose • Teenage girls will be introduced to strength training through the regular use of bands.

  4. Background and Significance • USDHHS • recommends muscular strength and endurance training as part of an overall program

  5. Teen Females Improve Body Image Through Strength Exercise A Solution:

  6. Why Strength Train? • Maintain healthy body weight • - 30% teased about weight • - Negative self-esteem, depression, suicide, thoughts • - Obese teens - heavy smokers • - Females overweight at 18, increase risk of death in middle age

  7. Why Strength Train? • Bone Density • Increased risk of fractures • 80% of females calcium deficient • Resistance training can increase bone mass • Improve cardiovascular risk profile • Improve psychological well being

  8. Why Resistance Bands? • In studies with young adults shown to be equivalent to traditional weight training • Inexpensive • Portable • Greater range of motion

  9. Why should girls lift free weights??? I don’t want muscles!!!

  10. Methodology • Goal #1: To promote positive lifestyle behaviors toward strength training in adolescent females • Goal #2: Participants will increase their pretest and post-test strength results by 10%.

  11. Project Methodology • Program Overview • - Pretest, Mid-Test, Post Test, & Follow up • - Two (Experimental Group and Control Group) • - 16-week program • - Basis progressive overload • - YMCA Pretest and Health Questionnaire
