  2. Introduction The symbols of the United States are very important to our country. This morning when the President woke up he realized that the American flag Statue of Liberty and the bald eagle were all missing. Lets help the President find the American symbols.

  3. Task • Your mission is to help find information on the missing United States symbols. • You will work in groups of three to help recover the missing symbols. Each of you will be assigned a job to complete. The photographer will take pictures of the symbols, the artist will be coloring the symbols and the researcher will be finding information about the symbols. • Once each job is completed you will work together to create a poster to help find the missing symbols.

  4. Resources • Computer/Printer • Americais by Louise Borden • Popsicle sticks with students names • 1 piece of paper per group • Crayons/markers • Pencils

Process • Listen as your teacher reads America is by Louise Borden. • As your teachers reads the story pay attention to the American symbols. • The teacher will assign groups and roles by picking the students names on popsicle sticks out of a cup. • After finding out information about each of the symbols, we will be able to create a poster to locate the symbols and return them to the President. • This WebQuest should take two days to complete (1 day to complete the role and the next day to discuss with group) Click on the picture below for your role. Photographer You will be finding pictures of the symbols on the internet. • Click here to find the pictures. • Type statue of liberty in the box and hit search. • Find 4 different pictures of the statue of liberty. • Double click on the image you want to see. • In the yellow box at the top of the page click on the image URL. • Hit file: print • Hit the back button in the top left had corner. • Erase the statue of liberty in the box and type bald eagle • Follow the same steps to search for bald eagle and then American Flag.

  7. Artist You will be coloring the symbols. 1. Click here to color a picture of the American Flag. • Click on Ben’s large coloring book. • Click on the U.S flag • Once you have completed the flag, hit print. 2. Click here to color a picture of the bald eagle. • Click on the color you wish to use on the left side and then click on the part of the eagle to color it. • Once you have completed the eagle, hit file:print. 3. Click here to color a picture of the Statue of Liberty. • Hit file:Print • Color the picture of the Statue.

Researcher You will be finding information about the symbols. • Click to get started. • If password is requested, see the teacher. • Type in the search space provided: American Flag (make sure the full text box is not selected) • Click the search button. • Click on the title American Flag- Weekly Reader - Edition 2, 10/29/2004 • Click on the PDF full text link at the bottom of the page. • Click on the print icon to print the article. • Follow along as the teacher reads the article to you.

Activity • After each group member has gathered their information, you will have 15 minutes to share your information with each other. • As a group you must decide which symbol you wish to draw. • Using a sheet of paper, the artist and photographer need to work together to draw and color the symbol. The researcher needs to write 1 fact about the symbol.

  11. Conclusion Congratulations!! We have returned the American flag, bald eagle, and the Statue of Liberty to their proper place. I received the following letter from the President. Dear Boys and Girls, Thank you for finding the American symbols. The American flag, bald eagle and Statue of Liberty are important to our country because they stand for freedom. Sincerely, The President of the United States

Grade Level Indicator: Recognize symbols of the United States that represent its democracy and values including: a. The national flag b. The Pledge of Allegiance Guidelines for Effective School Library Media Programs in Ohio Standard: Information Literacy- Effective school library media programs provide information literacy skills instruction. Benchmark E: Understand what information is and use a process to find information. Grade Level Indicator: Find the information with the assistance of the teacher or librarian (e.g., using books or observations).

Benchmark A: Understand that school library materials may be provided in electronic formats that are organized in a system and that access to the system may be provided electronically. Ohio Academic Content Standards for Technology Standard:Technology for Productivity Applications- Students learn the operations of technology through the usage of technology and productivity tools. Benchmark A: Understand basic computer and multimedia technology concepts and terminology Grade Level Indicator: Use computer and multimedia technology with teacher assistance (e.g., computer, VCR, listening station).
