  3. Sinuses • Palpate frontal and maxillary • Percuss for tenderness • A patient with sinusitis may have tenderness • Transillumination may be helpful

  4. Transillumination • Transillumination of the frontal and maxillary sinuses is performed if sinus tenderness is present or infection is suspected. • Must be done in a completely darkened room. • Use penlight or otoscope. • Apply light under each brow for frontal sinus. • Place light below inner aspect of eyes and observe through mouth for maxillary sinus. • An opaque or dull response indicates either the sinus is filled with secretions or not developed. • Note asymmetry of transillumination.
