  1. Task 11 Describe the national, international and organisational standards and conventions that are used for the models/drawings.

  2. National Standards • The U.K. Nationally recognised drawing standard is BS 8888 which replaces the old BS 308 parts 1, 2 & 3. • The initials BS mean British Standard. • This is the BS Kite mark symbol.

  3. International Standards • In the U.S.A. engineers work to ASME Y14.5 and Y14.5M. • ASME means American Society of Mechanical Engineers. • In Europe engineers work to the same standard as the U.K., but they call it the European Norm, so it would be referred to as BS EN 8888. • In Australia engineers will use Australian Standard AS 1100.101-1992. • Most countries in the world have their own standards, these are just a few examples.

  4. Organisational standards and conventions • Each company or organisation will have their own expectations and standards regarding their CAD models and drawings. These standards will cover aspects such as: • The company part or drawing number system • How and where drawings and models are filed (saved) • Personnel authorised to create, editor view model and drawing files.
