Leadership is..... • Groups of 6-8 • Marker and piece of poster paper • Produce a mural that depicts what “leadership is..” • NO WORDS (other than the title and names) • Use symbols, objects, pictures • Post your mural on the wall • Look at other murals for common elements • Is there anything missing?

  5. Leadership..... • A unique combination of individual qualities which enable others to achieve collective and personal goals. • The quality of having an intentional positive influence on the lives and behaviours of others. (CAHPERD)

  6. Homework for Thursday • Define “communication” in your own words • Describe your strengths when communicating with others • Describe one communication skill that you might improve upon when leading a group, and explain how you might go about improving that skill

What is YOUR definition of leadership? • Define LEADERSHIP in your own words. • Identify the qualities YOU feel are essential in effective leadership in the field of Physical and Health Education • Which of these do you possess? • Comment on your own leadership abilities. What qualities do you possess that will make you an effective leader? What qualities do you feel you could improve upon to make you a more effective leader?

Two-way is more effective because..... • You can ask for more information • You can clarify (check for understanding) Effective two-way communication is the basic skill required by all people in order to build relationships that are fair, open, and fulfilling But, what are the potential disadvantages of two-way communication?

  26. Communication Skills • I am a good listener when my friends have problems. • I prefer to be seen and not heard. • I often ridicule others when I am talking. • I often ask “WHY?” • I never interrupt another person when he/she is talking.

  27. 6. I am encouraging and supportive when talking to others. 7. I keep eye-to-eye contact when a person is speaking. 8. I frequently attack people’s ideas without apparent reason. 9. I talk too much when in a group. 10. I tell people when they have made a good point or have an interesting idea. 11. I admit errors when they exist and I can support the other person’s better idea.

  30. Try this.... • Pair up and sit back to back • When I say go, discuss a topic for several minutes • Then, sit face to face and continue the conversation

  31. Answer these questions on a piece of paper: • How does this experience compare to a phone conversation? • What are the advantages to face to face conversation? • What are the disadvantages? • Hand in your work with all names on the same sheet.

  32. For next week... • Monitor your own communication style using the following criteria: • Body language • Eye contact • Tone of voice • Active listening • Be prepared to discuss these skills on Tuesday.
