We’re trying to raise enough money to fund One local teacher’s salary, for One year, in India The school is located in the Himalayan foothills in Lolaygaon not far from Darjeeling, in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is an elementary school with 7 classrooms, administered by nuns who are native to the region, and whose lay teachers are drawn from the local area. This is a public school, open to students of all religions. The children are mostly of Nepali descent, even though they live in Indian villages. The families have emigrated from Nepal over the last 100 years. The homes are sprinkled on the sides of the hills and valleys, with many children walking between 1 and 2 hours to get to school. It will only cost around 1,600 CAD to fund a local teacher for a year. Please help us raise this amount, by giving whatever donation you can spare to the person that forwarded you this information. (The money will be delivered in person to the school by one of our student teacher colleagues, during their voluntary, self-funded Internship in May, 2011) Thank you , on behalf of the community of Lolaygaon. We are the 'Global Connections' cohort of teacher candidates from the University of Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE).
