  1. A2 Media Coursework Presentation Chris Longman

  2. My Production The storyline of my film is: • Brother and sister fall in love. They know what they are doing isn’t an average relationship, but they can’t control their feelings. • The parents do whatever they can to stop this. • The sibling couple want to be together, so they leave. They get plane tickets to Rome and fly off. • The parents are worried where they are. • It seems Brother and Sister are having a great time in Rome. But, they know they can’t stay in Rome due to insufficient money reasons, and they would have to face their parents eventually. • They are in a romantic bath setting, surrounded by candles, rose petals. They are drinking wine, laughing and joking. BUT, they poisoned their drinks, and they lay dead in the bath.

  3. Textual Analysis The films that I am to study to help the production of my film: • ‘Brief Encounter’ (1945) • ‘A Beautiful Thing’ (1996) • ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (1996) • ‘Twilight’ (2008)

  4. How has my genre of films moved on over time? Over time, Romance has developed dramatically. Originally, they feature adults falling in love, often they get married and to show their affection, you can see as much as a kiss. Today, films feature: • The supernatural • Homosexuality/Bisexuality • More explicit sex scenes • Violence and death

  5. Brief Encounter (1945) Cineguild is the company that produced the film, as well as: • ‘Great Expectations’ • ‘Oliver Twist’ They are a British company, that made films in the ‘40s and ‘50s. They were an independent company making, mainly, low budget movies. A readily married woman meets a doctor on a train and falls in love with him. Although, her husband is a successful professional.

  6. A Beautiful Thing (1996) Channel Four Films produced this film. • ‘Trainspotting’ • Many unheard of films. They have produced over 300 films, and distributed 65. But, they haven’t made all that much money. An independent, art house company. A film about two homosexuals that find each other and fall in love.

  7. Romeo and Juliet (1996) Made by Bazmark films, other films include: • ‘Moulin Rouge’ • ‘Australia’ They are interested in making popular and beautiful films. But, they take ages in making a movie. A traditional story about a man and a woman that shouldn’t fall in love because of their rival families, but they end up falling in love anyway. They are forced not to see each other, so they run away and commit suicide.

  8. Twilight (2008) Produced by Summit Entertainment They made films such as: • ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ • ‘Step Up’ • ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ • The sequel to Twilight, ‘New Moon’. Summit Entertainment are a independent company that were trying to find their ‘big break’. They have made a number of flops and some films that sold averagely, but the Twilight series films have brought them to success. A teenage girl falls in love with a vampire, they come across difficulties such as, Edward, the vampire, wants to eat her, Bella.

  9. Conventions of Romance • A Happy Ending - I am breaking this with suicide, but that is a happy ending in this context. • The music - Easy listening and gentle, not something like thrash metal. • Mise en scene - Clothing etc. • Storyline - There is always something getting in the way of falling perfectly in love. • Filming in black and white

  10. A Happy Ending? Generically, Romance films have a bumpy journey, but they are so in love that the ending is a lovey dovey, happy ending. My film, you could argue, has a happy OR a sad ending, depending on interpretation. They kill themselves because of their oppression, but they do end up together.

  11. Music for Romance • Light piano/acoustic guitar (on occasion). • Orchestral music at the time to show the strongest emotions. • A slow tempo, but it does increase at times of distress. • Repetitive riffs/melodies to signify themes such as: Twilight, there is a lullaby that Edward wrote for Bella. It is used at times to show their love for one another. I am going to make a signature song for my film.

  12. Mise En Scene I am going to feature a theme of the colour red using: • Rose petals • Red wine • Actors will be wearing a piece of red clothing during most of the film. • Showing only the colour red when filmed in black and white.
