  1. Turn in your Notebook. hot Topics in Genetics What is Genetics you may ask?The study of how traits are passed along. Get a new RP from here!!! Brainstorm with the student next to you to come up with a list of interesting topics that are related to genetics or DNA. Write that list on both your RPs. Who will have the best list?

  2. Today in Science ! Introduction to Genetics Two column Notes Notebooks . . . If you did not turn in your Notebook yesterday, put it into the class bin today for minus 10%. If you were not here for the test, you will take it today during connections.

  3. Let’s look at your RPs Share your lists with the class. • Count, write the number, circle it. • Listen closely to others; • No repeaters • Partners with most ideas or an unique idea earn a Daniel coupon!

  4. Notes – NB# 4 of new notebook • Write the topic in the left, listen to lecture then write one sentence summarizing what you thought was interesting. • There will be some questions to answer also. • There are about 6 hot topics that we will discuss. These are HOT topics. I picked them because they are engaging. AND yes, you will get to talk to each other about each topic . . .but please wait ‘till it is your turn.

  5. Hot topicsA. Genetic Disorders • Progeria is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the DNA that has occurred in 1 in 4 million children.

  6. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progeria

  7. Don’t call out the name of this next genetic disorder please!

  8. “These funny little creatures are _______ Pygmy Marmoset monkeys, born at the Froso Zoo in Ostersund, Sweden this week.” Daily Mail 8/06 albino What word goes in the blank?

  9. 2. Albinism • Lack of the pigment melanin. Skin is without color. Eyes look pink. Do you know why? • Albinism can be the result of a mutation of the DNA or can be inherited from parents.

  10. Normal Pygmy Marmoset monkeys http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=402067&in_page_id=1770

  12. On your notes add this question and write an answer Can plants be albino? Describe why or why not http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/discoblog/2010/12/08/a-creepy-monster-of-the-forest-the-albino-vampiric-redwood-tree/

  13. Genetic Disorders ..continued 3. Downs Syndrome • Another Genetic Disorder caused by an extra chromosome.

  14. More Hot Topics

  15. B. Selective Breeding • “The process of selecting a few organisms with desired traits to serve as parents of the next generation.” • What are some plants or animals that you might predict have undergone selective breeding? Talk to a partner.

  16. Labradoodle You want a nice family dog that is good with kids but you really hate sheeding dog hair. So you mix a lab and a poodle.

  17. Tomato • http://www.riverdeep.net/current/2002/04/042902t_gmfoods.jhtml • http://www.teachersdomain.org/resource/tdc02.sci.life.gen.breeding/

  20. Controversial Selective Breedingdesigner babieslittle persondeaf person Add this question and your opinion to your notes: Should parents be able to “design” a baby that has the same disability as they have?

  21. C. Genetic Modification • Changing the DNA of an organism by Scientifically inserting DNA segments into the chromosomes.

  22. Speaking of controversy …how about cloning? On your Notes write and anwer this: D. Cloning I think that cloning is ____________________

  23. What is cloning? Making an exact copy What do you already know about clones? Any asexual reproduction process results in a “clone” cause DNA is identical. Examples: budding, binary fission, rooting

  24. a.k.a.Somatic cell nuclear transfer . . . • Dolly the sheep is most famous clone. • There were 277 attempts before it worked. • 1 cell from sheep A mammary gland with the nucleus (and DNA) removed. • This nucleus was put into an unfertilized egg cell from another sheep. • This cell was then inserted into a surrogate sheep. • Dolly died prematurely.

  25. Dolly’s life Life span for a sheep is generally 12 years. At 5 she developed arthritis and then lung disease. Dolly “died” when she was 6. Dolly had at least 4 of her own lambs.

  26. GPS for our study of Genetics • S7L3 Students will recognize how biological traits are passed on to successive generations. • S7L3a Students will explain the role of genes and chromosomes in the process of inheriting a specific trait. • S7L3c Students will recognize that selective breeding can produce plants and animals with desired traits.

  27. Back to your RP please . . Next Topic

  28. Who is a Harry Potter fan? • http://www.slideserve.com/presentation/4747/Harry-Potter-Genetics-Powerpoint--Fun • Okay, smarty pants, what is a muggle?

  29. In Closing . . .Read over your notes 3 hot topic titles Questions I still have The most interesting part of today’s discussion.
