  1. Sonnet 33 By Shakespeare, Interpreted By Ian Neil

  2. Full many a glorious morning have I seen. This explains that he has seen many awe worthy mornings. He says full many, which means very many. Glorious seems to interpret that the morning was as if successful in showing or maybe he means it has once again veiled a beauty.

  3. Flatter the mountain tops with sovereign eye, The word flatter and sovereign eye combines as if to mean that the mountains have feeling. The morning as explained in the line before, makes the mountain top all the more beautiful.

  4. Kissing with golden face the meadows green, Kissing with golden face is an analogy for the sun shining on the meadows, which are green.

  5. Gliding pale streams with heavenly alchemy; Gliding pale streams and alchemy refers the old myths that other metals, could be turned in gold, and other valuable metals by the use of alchemy.

  6. Anon permit the basest clouds to ride. Anon permit means very soon, and morning sky , and basest means dirtiest, and blackest, almost as if a contradiction.

  7. With ugly rack on his celestial face, Ugly rack refers to the thin or outlaying clouds, and celestial face, means the night sky.

  8. And from the forlorn world his visage hide, From the forlorn world implies that the world is darkened from the rack of clouds, and from his visage hide, I interpreted to mean God’s shadow.

  9. Stealing unseen to west with this disgrace: Stealing means moving unseen or stealth fully, as if the visage is blotted out.

  10. Even so my sun one early morn did shine, My sun refers to one’s great and divine love, and in this line it means that his love shine in the morning. Morn is also short for morning.

  11. With all triumphant splendor on my brow; Triumphant splendor on my brow means all the victories and other acknowledgements he has had. On my brow means on my commemorations.

  12. But out, alack, he was but one hour mine, This means that the sun only shined for one hour, or that his love was his for, but one small hour.

  13. The region cloud hath mask’d him from me now. The region cloud refers to a wall or some issue, which has separated the lover and his love, just as the sun was separated from sight by the clouds.

  14. Yet him for this my love no whit disdaneth; The love is personified, which by love Shakespeare refers to youth, and the clouds which have covered it, as he grew older, and his youth was “disgraced.”

  15. Suns of the world may stain when heaven’s sun staineth. Suns of the world I interpreted as the youth of the world, which will fade and “stain” as Shakespeare says, when heaven’s sun as in the old comes upon the youth or “staineth.”
