  3. Bellringer #2: 2 minutes! • Carbon cycles through various materials here on Earth. Carbon is found in organisms that die and are broken down by microorganisms. How plants, animals and rocks are involved in the carbon cycle • Plants: • Plants pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and use it to make food through the process of photosynthesis. • The carbon becomes part of the plant stored food • Animals: • Eat plants they take in the carbon and some of it becomes part of their own bodies. • Through respiration, animals release carbon back into the atmosphere. • When plants and animals die: • most of their bodies are decomposed and carbon atoms are returned to the atmosphere. • Some are not decomposed fully and end up in deposits underground (oil, coal, etc.). • Carbon in rocks and underground deposits: • is released very slowly into the atmosphere.
