  1. NEWS FROM THE FIELD: CHIMNEY CAPS MUCH MORE THAN JUST A RAIN CAP In the spring months, we tend to get a lot of calls about animals inside the fireplace. Birds, squirrels and even raccoons are looking for a nest in order to have their babies. A fireplace flue is the perfect delivery room for these animals. Trying to remove an angry animal in a dark tight spot is not the preferred way of spending my day, this is why I make sure the customer has a cap installed at the top of their flue to prevent animals entering again. A customer of mine was scared to death of birds and was terrified when I found a black bird inside the fireplace. I was able to remove the bird safely. After the bird was released unharmed, I explained to her that this could have all been prevented if she had the proper cap installed. I returned later that day with 3 heavy duty stainless steel caps with animal screening to install on her fireplace flues. She could then live with the peace of mind that no other animal would be able to get into her fireplace to make a home. The added benefit, too, is that the caps keep rain and snow out of the fireplace. This is great since moisture is the enemy of masonry.
