  1. Background • Focus of study tour : • build on partnerships • "unpack" training delivered by suppliers and manufacturers • map to new Hairdressing National Training Package • formal recognition of the training into a relevant qualification

  2. Partnership benefits • “Training partnership” will enhance the delivery of training in the hairdressing industry sector. • training delivered by suppliers / manufacturers can be directed towards Training Package competencies - resulting in accreditation for the apprentice/employee • result in an increase in the level of qualifications achieved by people working in the hairdressing industry

  3. Wella Partnership • TAFE NSW has entered into an agreement with Wella Professional • Wella Professionals has undertaken the mapping of the Wella Global Education Program training to the current national hairdressing training package in consultation with TAFE NSW. • Allows apprentices and hairdressers to have quality industry training that is recognised as part of their qualification

  4. Study Tour Details • Two Countries Nine Cities and Thirty Six Meetings • Met with a wide variety of people from hairdressing companies / public and private RTO’s and hairdressing industry organisations. • Highly motivated, engaged and open with their own experiences and learning and were genuinely excited by the prospect of new learning opportunities. • List of Industry organisations: • TAFE Colleges • Private RTO’s • Employer Organisations -AHBA • Industry Regulators - HITO • Industry Organisations –AHC • Hairdressing Product Manufactures / Suppliers

  5. Examples of Partnerships • Aveda Box Hill TAFE Victoria – have formed a partnership where Box Hill TAFE has mapped all of the Aveda training to the training package. They have done this with hair and beauty; they are a total Aveda college where they only use Aveda products and deliver Aveda training and philosophy. • Brisbane Southbank Institute of Technology and Stefan Hairdressing – have formed a partnership that involves Southbank Institute only catering for the Stefan apprentices which number about 160. Stefan provides the apprentices and premises and Southbank Institute provides the teachers and the delivery and assessment of the training package.

  6. Concerns Identified • That the Hairdressing companies trainers had the qualification to deliver the training e.g. Cert Hair and TAA • That not all the states would agree to participate in the programme • That the company training that is being done does not line up with the level the apprentice is at their particular stage • For how long does the training that was provided by the hairdressing company remain valid and reliable if the apprentice is not assessed at the appropriate time? • Concerns that hairdressing companies might decide to become RTO’s

  7. Benefits Identified • Benefits to the companies - training is being formalised and recognised • The mapping of training - increase the standard of the training • Benefits to the salon - have the apprentices in the salon more • The benefit to the apprentice - trained on products that they are using in the salon • The benefits to the RTO’s - easier for them to recognise the training by the hairdressing companies • The benefits of partnerships and mapping on a national scale like Wella and a local scale e.g. Blackberries in WA

  8. Benefits Identified • Eliminate duplication leading to accelerated pathway to the qualification for apprentices • Enable colleges to structure and deliver training in a more time effective, personalised and customised manner to our students and salons • Increase the relevance and value of training • Improve outcomes for all stakeholders - training will be better structured and better aligned to industry competencies identified in the National Training Package. • Build better and more profitable relationships between all stakeholders

  9. Personal Growth • opportunity to meet, share and discuss a broad range of issues with hairdressing industry leaders from which I have learnt a great deal. • greater understanding of the issues and challenges that surround the hairdressing and training industries.
