11 T Project Meeting Update from Task 35.5 m Cold Mass December 17th, 2013 – F. SavaryWith contribution from S. Luzieux, R. Moron Ballester, and D. D. Ramos
Plan regarding cold mass design • Have a baseline, or conceptual design, by the end of 2013 • Integrated cold masses (common cryostat) … or • Separated cold masses (each cold mass would have its own cryostat, also independent from the collimator) • Integrated (meaning passing through the cold mass) or separate bus bar routing • Flat or dished end covers • … • Have a preliminary design by mid 2014, including a clear definition of the main dimensions, and of the various interfaces, meaning a preliminary technical specification for the cold mass assembly • Thereafter, start developing details towards a final design, and identify critical components in terms of procurement Kick-off Meeting Update from Task 3 - 5.5 m Cold Mass

About bb routing • Challenging … obviouslyspace limitations! • Integration of spool pieces (MCS) • Make things difficult for the integration of the bb lyras to the left of the collimator (seen from the center of the machine) … even if only for 15 mm stroke • But also to the right, because spool pieces take more space than internal connections • Mirror cold masses would mean two ‘connection’ ends on either side of the collimator • This may help … but • We do not gain in space if spool piecesare needed at these locations • The diode stack is on the connection end, and requires access for possible intervention • Some flexibility would be needed anywaybetween the two cold masses Update from Task 3 - 5.5 m Cold Mass
Tooling • WP1 (winding, binder curing) • Tension meter broken during testing, need to be repaired • Second layer spool holder, fabrication on-going, delivery end of Jan.14 • Mandrel/poles/shells/pushers, fabrication on-going, delivery end of Feb.14 • Binder curing mold, design needs to be refined. Order in the beginning of 2014, delivery planned in the end of Apr.14) • Handling tools / girder, design finished this week. To be ordered in the beginning of 2014 • WP2 (reaction treatment, instrumentation, and coil impregnation) • Reaction tooling (based on short model concept), drawings to be made in the beginning of 2014. A study aiming at understanding better gas shielding (protection of the coil), and possibly optimizing the reaction tooling will be launched a.s.a.p. in 2014 • Design of handling tools/girder for the reaction treatment will start in the beginning of 2014 • Design of impregnation tool, pressure leak tight, will start in the beginning of 2014 • Splice tooling will be an adaptation of the one currently used in B927 Update from Task 3 - 5.5 m Cold Mass
Winding, 1 • Reconstruction of the winding machine on-going • Spacers installed, to make it higher Update from Task 3 - 5.5 m Cold Mass
