  21. About schools for Deaf children Culture Note: For many years, state supported residential “schools for the deaf” have served as places where large numbers of Deaf children, including those from hearing families, become socialized into the cultural group. Many children learn American Sign Language at schools such as these rather than at home. Unto the 1960’s, because of distance and cost, children often had to stay at the schools on weekends and visited their parents’ home only on holidays or during the summers. Some Deaf children were reluctant to leave the school. When their families did not use sign language, the attraction of the school, with its large number of signers, was often stronger.
