  1. Harford County Department of Community Services’ Community Mediation ProgramCelebratedConflict Resolution Day

On October 15, 2009Harford County celebrated Conflict Resolution Day by… • Harford Community College hosted a table complete with a large banner in the Global Café; volunteer mediators were on hand during lunch to answer questions. • Harford County Libraries had conflict resolution displays the entire week of October 12th. Posters designed for the day were on display at 9 area locations and at various library branch tables. • Aberdeen Middle School participated by holding a Poetry Contest entitled “Ways We Make Peace.” Peer helpers handed out information during lunchtime, took part in morning announcements, and hung posters; during homeroom the students were given a sticker about steps for handling conflict to put in their Agenda Books, and the school sent home Conflict Resolution Day postcards with 1,200 students. Several students submitted bookmark entries in the MACRO contest. Also, during 5th period the 1st place winners of the Poetry Contest read their poems and each class held a 15 minute brainstorming or peace making session. • Edgewood Middle School participated in a variety of ways including morning announcements, peace games in P.E. classes, Social Study lessons in conflict resolution, and 10 peer helpers handing out bookmarks and Martin Luther King, Jr. cards at lunch. Also, they displayed posters around the school, hung a large banner, sent home flyers with 1,030 students about the HCCMP program, and were showed the Healing Communities video. • Welcome One displayed posters at Harford County Homeless Shelters. • HCCMP (Harford County Community Mediation Program) released a press release and posted information on the Harford County Department of Community Services web site (www.harfordcountymd.gov/services) about Conflict Resolution Day and tips and strategies for resolving conflicts. Volunteers staffed the tables, making morning announcements and each peer helper was provided with a HCCMP sling pack and stress ball key chain as a token of appreciation. HCCMP provided all the above participating organizations with materials for their celebrations.   3. Edgewood Middle School students learned about conflict resolution in Social Studies class.

  4. The Harford County Library is hosted tables at various branches the entire week.

  5. HCCMP supplied material to 9 libraries, HCC and 2 Middle Schools.

  6. Edgewood Middle School P.E. classes participated in cooperative games.

  7. Throughout Edgewood Middle School you could see Peace at work through poster, artwork and “Peace Doves”.

  8. Edgewood Students expressed their vision about peace in Art class.

  9. Everyone’s view of Peace is different, but can work together for the same goal!

  11. Give Peace a Chance! Aberdeen Middle School students entered MACRO’s Annual Book Mark Contest. There were over 400 entries. Two students from AMS received an honorable mention! (Pictured Edgewood art student with her Peace Dove. )
