Understanding CLASS: Essential Insights on Long-Term Care and Health Care Reform
The Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) program, established under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) in March 2010, aims to provide a voluntary, employer-based solution for long-term care expenses. Effective January 1, 2011, it seeks to assist individuals in maintaining independence, alleviate caregiver burdens, and shift Medicaid's focus from institutional care. With a cash benefit between $50-75/day for those needing help with daily activities after a 5-year waiting period, CLASS represents a significant change in long-term care funding, although benefits and premiums are still undetermined.
