  3. The Criminal Justice Department Policy • Requires A MINIMUM OF 20 hours of volunteer community service • All hours to be completed BY THE END OF YOUR THIRD SEMESTER • Evaluated in Service Readiness – a required course • 50% of your course grade (pass/fail) • 20 hours of service will be recognized by a Bronze Award • Hours must be documented • Hours must be pre-approved be a staff member • Hours exceeding 20 hours will be recognized • 40 hours = Silver Award • 60 hours = Gold Award

  4. Why the Policy Exists • Criminal Justice occupations are all about SERVICE! • Personal growth will occur • You become more competitive in the job market • We are asked all of the time by all kinds of organizations for assistance – THERE IS AN EXPECTATION OF YOU BEING SERVICE – MINDED!!!

  5. What hours and service will be (and won’t be) accepted under the policy • Must be non-profit • Must be pre-approved by a CJ Department member • Must be NON-PAID • May NOT be done during class time IF part of a class requirement

  6. Examples of Volunteer Hours • Tutoring children • Habitat for Humanity • Playing checkers with elderly • Assisting with police agency projects such as: • Counting homeless • Compliance checks • Eliminating graffiti • Boys and girls club mentoring • Big Brother/Big Sister • Role-playing for CJ Agency training scenarios • Coaching youth (K-8) or Special Olympic sports if not paid and relatives are not on the team

  7. Examples of NON-VolunteerHours • Coaching sports if paid • Refereeing sports • Working as a paid member at a non-profit organization • Any volunteer activity that is or may reflect poorly upon Mid-State Technical College, the Criminal Justice Department, or Law Enforcement • An activity that can not be verified • Volunteer fire departments (paid) • Part-time law enforcement (paid) • Military service (we thank you for your service but it is paid) • Any part-time, auxiliary membership on a law enforcement department is NOT eligible for this requirement regardless if paid or not paid

  8. Do you have a question on what is or is NOT qualifying??? Ask your instructor!

  9. Why Volunteer? • Volunteer activity is likely to be an employment interview question • The career requires interaction with a wide spectrum of society • Its good to interact with individuals/groups we are unfamiliar with • MOST IMPORTANT???
