  2. Today’s Objective 7.3.A - Patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking. The student solves problems involving direct proportional relationships. The student is expected to: Estimate and find solutions to application problems involving percent Where Can I Find This? Study Island: 2A OLS: Unit 9 – Lessons 12, 13, and 14

  3. Proportions Can Be Used with Percents Too! Tax - How much tax on a purchase? Tips– How much tip to leave at a restaurant? Discounts -How much will an item cost with a discount? Commission – How much money will a salesperson make on sales?

  4. Percents? • A percent means parts per hundred. • In math, the % symbol stands for percent! • A percent can be written as a fraction by dividing by 100. 43% = 43/100 • …or a decimal by moving the decimal to the left twice. 43% = .43

  5. How is a Percent Written in a Proportion? ~ Percent 25% Percent 95% Percent 82.5%

  6. How to Set Up Percent Proportions… Tax-> Tip-> Discount-> Commission-> General % Problems->

  7. Example 1: Tax Problem! An IPOD Touch is priced at $299, and the sales tax is 8.3%. What is the total cost of the IPOD Touch?

  8. Example 2: Tip Problem! A restaurant bill comes to $28.35. Find the total cost of the meal if there is a 20% tip left on the total.

  9. Example 3: Discount Problem! Bath and Body Works scented oil usually costs $7.50 a bottle. This week it is on sale for $4.00. What is the percent of discount on the scented oil?

  10. Example 4: Commission Problem! An electronics salesperson sold $15,486 worth of computers last month. She makes 3 % commission on all sales and earns a monthly salary of $1200. What was her total pay?

  11. Example 5: Generic Problem! Yolanda’s club has 35 members. Its rules require that 60% of them must be present for any vote. At least how many members must be present to have a vote?
