  1. STATIC ELECTRICITY TLW explore the effects of static electricity. TLW describe the characteristics of static electricity and how it is formed. TLW compare materials along with electrical discharges, including lightning, will and will not transfer. Created by Kristy Lynn Price

  2. What is Electrical Charge? • How can you produce charges on objects, such as balloons? • Matter is made of tiny particles that can be negative or positive • Opposite charges attract • Negative charges repel • Balloon Demonstration (F70) • Static Electricity is the build-up of charge on a material + - + - + - Created by Kristy Lynn Price

  3. What is an Electrical Discharge? • Walking across carpet… • When you touch something, the charge moves from your body to another object. This is called discharge. • Electricity does not discharge into all materials • Conductors: Allows electricity to flow easily through materials • Insulators: Electricity does not flow Created by Kristy Lynn Price

  4. How Does Lightning Form? • Static electricity forms lightning bolts • Lightning is a discharge of static electricity form a huge cloud called a thundercloud • How is lightning similar to the shock you receive by touching a doorknob? • A single lightning bolt has enough power to light 100 million light bulbs. • Look at the diagram on page F73 Created by Kristy Lynn Price

  5. Review • What are the two types of electrical charges in atoms? • What types of materials can electricity easily discharge into? • What is lightning? Created by Kristy Lynn Price
