Adding ‘ing’ to words. What happens to the following words when we add ‘–ing’ onto the end? Try to think of a reason for the different changes. milk. ing. help. ing. When we add ‘ing’ to short vowel words (a,e,i,o,u) ending in two consonant sounds we simply add the letters i, n and g.
