Calculating Oxidation Numbers. 1. For elements (as opposed to compounds), the oxidation number is zero 2. Assume hydrogen is +1 and oxygen is -2 (rule 1 is an exception) 3. Do not forget what you already knew (ex: Na is +1) 4. The sum of the ox #’s = the overall charge.

  1. Calculating Oxidation Numbers 1. For elements (as opposed to compounds), the oxidation number is zero 2. Assume hydrogen is +1 and oxygen is -2 (rule 1 is an exception) 3. Do not forget what you already knew (ex: Na is +1) 4. The sum of the ox #’s = the overall charge. 5. Using rule 4, calculate the oxidation # in question.

  2. Balancing Redox Equations (the half-reaction method) Divide the reaction into half-reactions. Balance elements other than H, O. Balance O by adding water molecules. Balance H by adding hydrogen ions. Balance charge by adding electrons. Recombine the two half-reactions after multiplying each by the appropriate integer which allows the electrons to cancel. (for basic conditions) Add hydroxide ions to each side so as to eliminate hydrogen ions from the equation.
