  4. Novel • We will be doing a literature circle and preparing to write college style essays. • Choices: • The Sorrow of War by BaoNinh • City of the Beasts by Isabel Allende

  5. The Sorrow of War • 1990 novel by the Vietnamese writer BaoNinh • Has been translated into many languages, including German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian and Polish • It tells the story of a soldier who is collecting dead bodies after a battle and then begins to think about his past

  6. The City of Beasts • Published in 2002by Chilean author Isabel Allende • Set in the Amazon rainforest • Translated from Spanish to English • Story of Alexander Cold, who is 15 years old and going through a family crisis. While his parents leave for Texas to try to treat his mother's cancer, Alex and his sisters are sent to live with their grandmothers in New York City.

Jamaica Kincaid • Born in 1949 on the island of Antigua as Elaine Richardson • Fled at age 17 to New York and changed her name after family disputes • Regular contribuer to New York Magazine • Status as an “Exile” • Deceptively simple prose is marked by poetic lyricism, vivid imagery, and nonlinear time.
