Meeting 2: Where Do We WANT TO BE? January 16, 2003 Meeting Preparations - an Army can’t march on an empty stomach!!!)
Schools • New elementary school at the lower end of the county to replace KQ Elementary with “wings” for grade levels to include middle school ages • Additions to Lawson-Marriott to accomplish similar division layout as KQES • Creative community involvement • Job-focused training and re-training opportunities for all ages
Keep Major Business Corridors on Routes 360 and 33 Business Park Development near Caroline line, near St. Stephens Church, near the Middlesex line and at Walkerton Hospitality areas - Courthouse area Work with Rappahannocks on development of their “Village” to encourage tourism and appreciation of our complete history Encourage and support micro-enterprise Business & Retail Development
Community Village web site connecting the community and the world Infrastructure to support high speed access to internet across all areas of the County All core services connected Training and assistance in the use of technology to all ages Radio/TV studio at high school Technology Development
Agriculture • Farmers Markets on Routes 33 and 360 • Keep most of central section of the County zoned Agriculture and Timber • Agri-Tourism (micro-businesses)
Convert old KQ Elementary to Community Center Equestrian Center near Powcan area Develop recreational and cultural programs at all schools year- round Bike/Hike trails in courthouse area, Dragon Run area and Rappahannock Tribal area Development of river recreation - canoes, camping Recreation and Leisure
Medical • Wellness centers at the community centers • Health/Medical centers at Shacklefords, St. Stephens Church, and in upper part of the County • Retirement community development on upper and lower end of the County
HOW DO WE GET THERE? January 23, 2003 Many Take Charge participants already serve on sub- committees for the development of a new Comprehensive Plan. Therefore, the most efficient conduit to decision-makers exists within the Take Charge group. Specific individuals will take suggestions developed through Take Charge directly to their respective sub-committees.
Education - Rosemary Overton • Stress the fundamentals (and common sense decisions) • Focus on positive discipline • Encourage appropriate dress • Seek ways to connect/involve students in the community/school to instill a sense of pride (adopt a classroom concept) • Explore the possibility of local vocational classes such as agriculture (FFA) and others • Professional development opportunities for teachers with a focus on positive classroom behavior management • Seek funding for additional classroom aides
Housing - Abigail Collins • Encourage development of rental facilities - this is a problem in attracting teachers • Encourage development of moderately priced homes • Seek more grant funding to address housing issues
Parks & Recreation - Sally Mills • Seek ways to organize the community • Utilize existing schools as focal points for recreation programs • Support community center development and development of youth organizations - get the word out about existing programs such as Cub Scouts and others
Land Use - Ann Marie Voight • Seek ways to encourage businesses which would enhance the economy • Establish small industrial parks with facilities to attract clean business
Transportation - Jerry Davis • Improve roads - encourage “organized” patching • Market existing public transportation available (Bay Transit) -increased use would document a need for additions or expansions
Economic Development - Ed Gran • Explore working with other counties • Create a small business association • Support development of farmers markets • Support micro-business development from within
What’s Next with Technolgy? • Complete development of the Community Village web site • Survey assessment of current computer/internet usage • Seek grant funding to support infrastructure, equipment and training • Agri-Tourism Regional Conference (develop micro-business in KQ)
