  1. MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT Birches Head High School “Building Brighter Futures For All” in partnership with... S-on-T Sixth Form College, Staffordshire University, Partners in Creative Learning, S-on-T LA, Forest Park Primary, Abbey Hill Special School, supported by the Co-operative College and all TILT members present and future.

  2. Local Context • Children services in Intervention until 2010 • Re-organisation of city secondary education • Reduction in secondary schools • 5 sponsored academies • Top down leadership and centralisation of control = passivity

  3. Our context • 2005-6 Special Measures • Deficit budget • 2004-6 Capital build to put school on one site • 2010 – Co-operative Foundation Trust • 2011 – Ofsted judged school good – with outstanding partnership work

  7. Year 1 we..... Engage membership with current active stakeholder groups through: • Visioning Day • Competition with primaries and secondary to design logo • Design of members card • Celebration of TILT 1 year

Developing Membership: Community organisations • Celebrated and engaged existing partnerships through our Community Cohesion Group Learner • Restructured pastoral system to create vertical tutoring families within Houses with TILT Reps to create House Action Team • Houses Elect TILT Rep Learner Reps to Trust Forum Parent & Community • Parent group (small) based on survey of parents who said would help with creating Parent Online Forum Staff • Staff group –engaged those already interested in partnership work • Reviewed staffing structures and Job descriptions to support TILT

  9. Year 1 ended with groups agreeing: • Calendar of meetings • Remit for groups established and agreed • Elected members to Trust Forum • Trust Board agreeing priority theme for year 2 • Trust Forum 1st meeting and initial priorities for year 2 within theme • and........

CCG: Our Community Organisations Member Group A range of agencies & services from the local area are meeting each month at BHHS to discuss how they can work together on a wide range of opportunities for young people, their families & the local community. Representatives from 20 different organisations have already attended and many new links have been made between the agencies. They include our partner primary schools, colleges, emergency & health services and partners from various children’s, family & ethnic groups.

  12. CCG MEMBERS HAVE SUPPORTED... Driving Skills &Road Safety • In the safety of the school premises, BSM instructors gave a series of “taster” driving lessons to our year 11 students. They were taught basic manoeuvres and techniques to control the car along with valuable road safety advice and information. • These sessions have proved very popular as they combine the serious issues of becoming a new young driver with the fun and exciting aspects of driving for the first time. Our students were praised by the instructors for their ability and attitude to driving which they said would help them when starting out on the road by themselves.

Art in the Community • Students from BHHS, along with 3 other city schools, were asked to design a piece of artwork themed around aspects of community in Stoke-on-Trent. • The artwork was professionally printed and mounted to form a 3m x 2m mural which is now on show at the Bentilee Neighbourhood Centre. • The mural was unveiled by TheLordMayorfortheCityofStoke-on-Trent,CouncillorDenverTolley.

  14. Improving Local Facilities • Takeover Day offers young people a chance to work with adults and get involved in decision making. A group of year 7 & 8 students were asked for their ideas on redeveloping the Drive Park area of Birches Head. Our students worked with local police officers and councillors to produce a proposal for the area that will appeal to all members of the local community. Their plans are currently being reviewed.

  15. Police Post • Volunteer technicians from the BHHS community IT group installed equipment into the local Police Post at the Bridge Centre in Birches Head.

  16. Learning With Partners for Science • We have linked up with the Police to increase awareness of a range of issues which affect our community, including road safety around the school. Here we see students checking the speed of cars passing the school entrance. This activity was also used to support their science work when studying how speed was calculated.

Primary Partners • Birches Head students are working directly with partner primary pupils to raise their awareness of internet security & safety. • Student Sports leaders deliver sport activities • Dance Leaders deliver dance activities • Btec Media, Performing arts and Sports students work with primaries whilst completing own courses • Science work on curriculum development and teaching of Science • English staff are involved in learning from primary practise and cross phase moderation • Literacy Co-ordinator builds on primary Big Write

  18. Sharing Technology BHHS and Abbey Hulton Primary School share IT resources, installed by our volunteer technicians. Silver Surfers Our group of community learners meet every Tuesday after school and are all making great progress in their knowledge of computer applications, email and internet browsing.

  19. Parents & Community Members .... • Created online forum for parents for discussion and surveying • Now.... Creating members page on TILT website

Staff & Learners Offering partnership activities including: • Youth Mania Y5&6 Youth Club led by secondary students & staff • Dance Leaders workshops for primary • Sports Leader sessions for primary • STEM, Science and Media projects led by secondary & primary staff • Subject leader network for Primary & Secondary staff • Leadership support through Primary & secondary TILT network • Behaviour Support for vulnerable students • Staff & student reps are working together and have developed the role of the TILT Rep in our House system

Purpose of Trust Forum • To represent the views of membership groups and shape the Trusts action • To create a membership action plan that moves forward the trust vision • Recommend to the Trust Board priorities for TILT • To enable equality and inclusion for all members in shaping the direction of the trust • Support & facilitate the delivery of the action plan through the membership groups • To monitor and manage the delegated budget(s) in relation to the TRUST Action Plan supported by the Trust Board • Organise own calendar and procedures for Forum
