  1. Parenthetical Citations You can practice all during Thanksgiving break! (I know, I know, you don’t have to thank me.)

  2. Author-page style Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (263).  Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263). • Include the author’s last name either in the sentence or the citations.

  3. No author? • We see so many global warming hotspots in North America likely because this region has "more readily accessible climatic data and more comprehensive programs to monitor and study environmental change . . ." ("Impact of Global Warming" 6).

  4. “4th period had a week of silence . . . Now they can talk” (Premont 84). • “4th period learned a valuable lesson and now they will not throw items across the room. . . .“ (304).

  5. Citing a Work by Multiple Authors The authors state “Turkey on Thanksgiving is only rivaled with cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning" (Smith, Yang, and Moore 76). • Smith, Yang, and Moore argue that Turkey is just as good as cinnamon rolls on a brisk Christmas morning (76).

  6. More than three authors? Legal experts counter Smith, Yang, and Moore's argument by bringing in data that support the idea of Mini Wheats instead of Lucky Charms(Jones et al. 4). • Jones et al. counter Smith, Yang, and Moore's argument by noting Lucky Charms should not be discounted as a cereal option on Christmas(4).

  7. Quoting/Paraphrasing Quotes Paraphrasing involves putting a passage from source material into your own words. A paraphrase must also be attributed to the original source. Paraphrased material is shorter than the original passage. • Should be word for word, with quotation marks and an in-text citation. • Hint: cut quotes to the core and use them like spice, sparingly (Deborah Dean). • Premont claims “Play practice is lame . . . and students should not be taken out of English class. Math class is fine.

  8. “The most spacious living room you would ever see as seen in New York City in the upstate residence of Henderson” • (“The Most Spacious”).

  9. Many believe that a thorough reading of Huck Finn will increase one’s tolerance of anti-slavery acts (Dean 72). • Dean argues that “Huckleberry Finn results in a higher understanding of the Antebellum south during the pre-civil war era” (72).

  10. continued summarizing Why use quote, paraphrase, and summary? Provide support for claims or add credibility to your writing Refer to work that leads up to the work you are now doing Give examples of several points of view on a subject Call attention to a position that you wish to agree or disagree with Highlight a particularly striking phrase, sentence, or passage by quoting the original Distance yourself from the original by quoting it in order to cue readers that the words are not your own Expand the breadth or depth of your writing •  involves putting the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main point(s). Once again, it is necessary to attribute summarized ideas to the original source. Summaries are significantly shorter than the original and take a broad overview of the source material.

  11. Is there ever a time when you don’t need a citation?
