  1. Good Morning Hypocrites and Pharisees and I mean that in a nice way

  2. THE BIBLE IS FILLED WITH HUMOR

  3. God Does Not Mind Us Laughing • God laughs • Psalm 2:4 He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them • Psalm 37:13 The Lord laughs at him, For He sees his day is coming.

  4. God Does Not Mind Us Laughing • God encourages our laughter • Psalm 126:1-2 When the LORD brought back the captive ones of Zion, We were like those who dream. 2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter And our tongue with joyful shouting; Then they said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them."

  5. God Does Not Mind Us Laughing • God makes us laugh at funny things

  6. God Is Not Dour • Jonathan Edwards tried not to laugh on Sunday • Henry Ward Beecher was not allowed to laugh on Sunday.

  7. Jesus Both Laughed and Caused Laughter • Hebrew humor is overstatement • Look for overstatement or incongruity in any of Jesus’ statements • This is seen very clearly in today’s text

  8. Matthew 7:3-5 • Matthew 7:3-5 3 "Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?"Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold, the log is in your own eye? 5 "You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

  9. 1. What Were These People Like? • Hypocrites- the word comes from the Greek world of the theatre. It is the mask which the actor wore

  10. 1. What Were These People Like? • They were mentioned many times in the Sermon on the Mount. • Don’t give like hypocrites • Matthew 6:2 2 "So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

  11. Don’t pray like hypocrites • Matthew 6:5 5 "When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

  12. Don’t fast like hypocrites • Matthew 6:16 16 "Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

  13. Don’t help other people like hypocrites • Matthew 7:5 5 "You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

  14. Don’t be like any of the hypocrite family • Matthew 23:13 13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, . . . • Matthew 23:14 14 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, . . . • Matthew 23:15 15 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, . . .

  15. 2. Who Are These People Today?

  16. 3. How Do We Recover? • Jesus tells us that the whole law can be summed up into two commands: • Matthew 22:37-39 37 And He said to him, "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'

  17. 38 "This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'

  18. 2 Commands • Love God- • This teaches us that we are never fully recovered • We are all in a 12 step program for recovering hypocrites and Pharisees

  19. Love your neighbor • Are you passing on that story because you love your neighbor? • Are you correcting someone because you want the best for them? • Do we do what we do to make our selves feel better (at least I am not as bad at that) or to help your brother or sister in a time of trouble. • What would you want them to do for you?

  20. Have You Cleaned Up Your Act? • Speck and Log are very funny images • The humor slides by our defenses, it allows Jesus to “tell the truth, but tell it slant” to get past the armor of our own self delusion • The problem is that you cannot clean up your act • That is why we need the Sermon on the Mount

  21. In the End • You can leave here in one of two ways: • You can leave wit the idea that you are a horrible person who will never be good enough • In that case your life will always be sad and dour and you shouldn’t smile on Sundays or have any fun on thanksgiving day

  22. Or . . . • You can leave here realizing that you will never be good enough, but • God has sent someone else who is good enough to take your place • In that case you can walk out of here dancing, laughing and singing and Sunday can be the happiest, most joyful day of all because we are a redeemed people on our way to a celestial city of eternal laughter

  23. This Thanksgiving • Love God • Love Other People • Live Joyfully
