  2. Childhood and Education of John Mauchly On August 30, 1907, in Cincinnati, Ohio, John Mauchly was born. He enrolled in John Hopkins University in the fall of 1925 on a scholarship he earned.

  3. Childhood and Education of J. P. Eckert John Eckert was born to a wealthy real estate developer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 9, 1919. Encouraged by his parents, John enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School to study business. In 1937, he transferred to Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Electrical Engineering.

  4. Making A Connection John Eckert and John Mauchly met in 1942 when the army asked the University of Pennsylvania to have a class of scientists to help the war effort. Eckert was the teacher and Mauchly was a student. They both went on to attend the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.

  5. Plan of Invention On May 31, 1943, a military commision on a new type of computer began. John Mauchly was the chief consultant and John Eckert was the chief engineer. This started the computer careers of the two inventors that helped to change the world of computing forever!

  6. The Eckert-Mauchly Computer In 1947, Eckert and Mauchly formed the first computer company, the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation (EMCC); Mauchly acted as the president. They secured the contract with the National Bureau of Standards to build an “EDVAC II”, which was later named UNIVAC. UNIVAC, the first computer designed for business applications, had many significant technical advantages such as magnetic tape for mass storage. As an interim product, the company created and delivered a smaller computer, BINAC, but were still in a shaky financial situation. Fortunately, they were purchased by Remington Rand and became the UNIVAC division.
