  2. The Mission of the Church • In April 1988, President Ezra Taft Benson re-stated the purpose for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints • He said: • May we all go to our homes rededicated to the sacred mission of the Church … to “invite all to come unto Christ” (D&C 20:59), “yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him” (Moro. 10:32). • He continued saying: • Yes, brothers and sisters, the mission of the Church is glorious—to invite all of us to come unto Christ through proclaiming the gospel, perfecting our lives, and redeeming our dead. As we come unto Christ, we bless our own lives, those of our families, and our Father in Heaven’s children, both living and dead.

  3. What does it mean to “come unto Christ”? • Recognize that Christ is the only begotten of God • Reject the worldly and secular elements in our lives • Choose to follow the path that he sets for us • Draw near to God through our personal efforts • Pledge allegiance and loyalty to Christ • Obey his commands & subject ourselves to his will

  4. What does “be perfected in him”mean? • A preview of this perfected state witnessed by Peter, James, and John when Jesus was transfigured • “The brethren saw the Lord in a glorified and transfigured state” – Bible Dictionary • If we are willing, Christ will permanently transform us humans into beings like him in a similar glorified state • This transformation process is long, painful, and difficult. It is called “Repentance”. • The difficult work is all done by the Savior but humans sometimes foolishly think that they do the work of changing themselves. • Most humans recognize the need to repent but choose to not go through with it. They fear it is too hard or not worthwhile. • Repentance, to be successful, requires a “broken heart and a contrite spirit” • God compels no person to repent but invites all to join him

  5. Invite all to “come unto Christ and be perfected in him” (Moroni 10:32) • What does it mean to invite “all” to come unto Christ? • Only the people that we like? • Only the people that don’t have a lot of personal problems or issues? • Only the people that have my same common interests? • Only the people that have my same background or heritage?

  6. The Reward - Why does God want us to Come unto Christ and be perfected? • He wants us to be part of his eternal family • He wants us to grow, develop, and become like him (eternal, immortal, perfected) • Moses 1:39 • For behold, this is my work and my glory – to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. • He wants us to willingly choose this path and partake of his glory and love by our own choice

  13. President Thomas S. Monson There are feet to steady, hands to grasp, minds to encourage, hearts to inspire, and souls to save. Are we doing all we should?

  14. How does someone come unto Christ? • Step 1: Recognize God is our creator • Step 2: Recognize that we are not following his will and that we are powerless against death • Step 3: Recognize that Jesus Christ • Is the only begotten son of God • Came to earth and became a man • Provided the perfect atoning sacrifice to redeem mankind • Invites all to partake of his salvation • Step 4: Repent and be baptized • Step 5: Continuously repent and re-new covenants through the sacred ordinance of the Sacrament
