  1. Clip meeting, March 4, 2005 • LTM • Land to LTM • Land cover to RAMS • Other?

  2. LTM • Land cover to use – reclassification • Use the 30+ from Africover/GLC hybrid, will collapse obviously similar classes (e.g., water, urban) • Possible problems in LTM with computing time with so many classes • Bryan will “just run it” to see how it does • Population projections – use UN estimates, not SRES scenarios • LTM Input variables • Elev (but missing Somalia, Eth, Moz @ 90m), distance from surface water, roads and towns, slope, soil’s crop potential (from Phil), evapotranspiration, rainfall, annual temp, population density 2000, country boundaries, park boundaries. Maybe later prepare a gravity model for migration…

  3. Land to LTM • How incorporate results of crop-climate models into LTM? • A PDF would work. LTM could show where crop could grow with the revised climate (potentially); Jeff & A. working on technology effects on crop productivity; • Ruth’s output: how will it be incorporated? Act as a “check” on the LTM, but LPJ has fewer classes. Question of role of incorporating the effects of fires, and examining carbonwe should do something on carbon (changing amounts sequestered). • Temp variability of NPP under natural & human system with climate forcing: Alagarswamy has run CERES for Embu & So TZ, both wet areas, and is starting on Machakos (marginal maize area). • Savannas: vegetation within the savanna land cover class changes over time with human land management : Ben will do a lit review, historical analysis of how savanna veg has changed due to human management (to be confirmed). Maybe do LCC MODIS analysis in case study areas of the impact of changing intensity of use (grazing, cropping). • Migration, conflict over resources, impacts on livelihood systems: Sigismond may do literature review of conflict over land & water resources between land uses (pastoral, farmer, conservation) and how in-migration has played a part (to be confirmed). • Large shifts in population (migration)info on drivers, impacts, would be useful to include in LU modeling. Could use as decision rules for Mabel.

  4. Land cover to Rams • Rams Update… Memory allocation problems at Purdue. Nganga still hasn’t responded re correlations. Looking at precip variability. Will run with new CLIP land cover to compare w/ OGE. Requested time on NCAR, would allow multiple experiments. • Bryan will look for someone at Purdue who knows the code who can sit with Nathan to go through it until it works. Maybe bring expert coder from here (ask Kemple) to Purdue to sit & go through it. • MSU system: Leo Kemple had a meeting with DJC, Jeff & Nathan: lots of ram, Nathan will be a beta tester (next week); second one less ram but heavy processors, Nathan will be beta tester on that one as well. Maybe get dedicated time but will be opened up. There will be tech support. • MODIS analysis: geometric accuracy (pixel by pixel lining up)? • Sarah looking into articles on space-time analyses
