  1. Thief on the Crossby Robert C. Archer

  2. Luke 23:39-43 (NKJV) • 39 Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” 40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” 43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

  3. Questions • Was he baptized? Don’t know! • Was he saved? Yes! • Can we be saved like him? No! Ex. Foy Wallace, “You may be a thief, but you won’t be saved like this thief.” Why not?

  4. Why can’t we be saved like the thief? • He lived under a different law - the Law of Moses • The Law of Moses ended at the cross • Colossians 2:14 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. • Jesus’ Will Had Not Taken Effect • A will is a legal instrument by which a man provides for the distribution of his possessions after he dies.

  5. A will calls for: • A testator, someone to make the will • An inheritance • Inheritors • Conditions of inheritance • The death of the testator • An executor

  6. All were present in Jesus’ will • He was “testator” or maker of the will • Hebrews 9:15 15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

  7. In Jesus’ Will • The inheritance is eternal life • 1 Peter 1:3-4 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,

  8. In Jesus’ Will • Inheritors are the “called” • Hebrews 9:15 15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

  9. In Jesus’ Will • The conditions are “obedience of faith” • Romans 1:5 5 Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,

  10. In Jesus’ Will • The death of the testator has occurred • Luke 23:46 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.' " Having said this, He breathed His last.

  11. In Jesus’ Will • The executors were the apostles, and those who proclaim the terms of the testament • Acts 1:8 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

  12. While alive, a will can be changed • A living testator can dispose of his possessions without regard to the terms of his “last will and testament.” • But after He died, His will was set – it cannot be changed!

  13. Will had not been set • Jesus’ response to the thief was before his death — He could save as He wished while He lived before His will was set • Matthew 9:2 2 Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you."

  14. Only under one will • Romans 7:1-4 1 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. 4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another--to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

  15. The thief’s good qualities • Feared God - 40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? • Realized he was a sinner - 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong." • Sought salvation - 42 Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom."

  16. Conclusion • Three died on the cross that day • One was a cross of Redemption • One was a cross of Rebellion • One was a cross of Repentance
