Introduction • The Comparative Political Data Sets (CPDS) are three separate datasets provided by researchers at the University of Berne. • Contain a collection of political and institutional data, but cover different countries and time periods • Suitable for cross-national, longitudinal and pooled time series analyses.
Methodology • Expert Coding (>Problems?) • Election Data • Fiscal and social policy variables based on government statistics (national accounts> Problems?)
CPDS I • Based on: „Die Handlungs-spielräume des Nationalstaates“ and “Critical junctures. An international comparison” by Klaus Armingeon et al. • 23 OECD Countries (democracies) • Annual Data (1960-2008) • political data only for the democratic periods of Greece, Spain and Portugal • additional demographic, socio- and economic variables

CPDS II • Based on: “Forms of Government. A Comparative Data Set for 28 Eastern Countries“ by Klaus Armingeon et al. • 28 Post-Communist Countries • Annual Data (1989–2004) • For member states of the former Soviet Union, the entries cover the period following their official independence from the USSR (mostly after 1991 and 1992).

CPDS III • 35 OECD and/or EU-member countries • (mostly) annual data (1990-2008) • Data are mainly drawn from CPDS I & II • Cyprus (without the Northern territory) and Malta have been added • only data for post-communist countries that joined the EU
CPDS III • The cabinet composition (right-centre-left) was calculated both as a percentage of parliamentary seats (II) and as a percentage of cabinet positions(I) • New Variables in ‘Fiscal and Social Policy’
