China’s Dynasties • Middle Kingdom-name that the Chinese gave to their land • Ming dynasty-Chinese forces overthrew the Mongols and restored Chinese rule and emphasized national pride • Taizu-founder of the Ming dynasty who ruled with absolute power • Chengzu-3rd emperor of the Ming dynasty who focused on having the arts in Chinese society
The Arts • Porcelain was perfected by Chinese artists and it soon began to be exported to Europe • Painting landscapes (nature scenes) became popular during the Ming dynasty.
Reconstruction and Exploration • The Ming dynasty rebuilt portions of the Great Wall. They repaired roads and bridges and built the Imperial City in their capital city • They also completed the restoration of the Grand Canal that had started over a thousand years earlier • Zheng He became admiral of an enormous fleet of ships that sailed to far away places and brought back valuable items from other countries
The Ottoman Empire • Ottoman Empire-began in the 14th century in the land east of the Byzantine Empire called Anatolia • Mehmet II-Ottoman leader who led them in their quest to conquer Constantinople. Constantinople was defeated in 1453 and was renamed Istanbul.
The Safavid Empire • Ismail and his family belonged to the Safavid clan. When he was young, his father and brother were killed by a rival clan. Ismail became head of his family and began to conquer land years later. • He became Shah Ismail I and created the Safavid dynasty • Abbas later became a strong ruler who conquered new land and created a new style of architecture
The Mughal Empire • Babur, a Muslim leader became the leader of Turkish-Mongol tribes and led them into northern India to capture land. • This created the Mughal dynasty • Akbar, the grandson of Babur, was the most effective ruler who led the expansion of the empire • Britain established the British East India Company to get supplies from Asia and eventually took over the government of India and other countries
